Hi Annika, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When my daughter was just three months old, I was deep in the beautiful, exhausting season of motherhood. Like so many stay-at-home moms, One of my mom friends invited me to take a Mahjong lessons together, and I had no idea how much that decision would change my life. Mahjong quickly became my joyful outlet—my first hobby after becoming a mom. It gave me something to look forward to each week, challenged my mind, and introduced me to a community of incredible women. Before long, I was playing every chance I got, and many of my closest friendships today were built around a Mahjong table.
It was during one of those games that my co-founder, Laura, and I had the conversation that would eventually become Sonoran Mahjong Co. We knew we wanted to share the joy that Mahjong had brought into our lives with others. More than teaching a game, we wanted to build a business rooted in community, connection, and giving back. We dreamed of creating experiences that brought people together while supporting the amazing locally owned businesses that make Phoenix such a special place to call home.
What we never expected was the incredible support our community would show us. We have been truly blown away by the enthusiasm, kindness, and encouragement we’ve received. Because of that support, we’ve had the opportunity to host Mahjong fundraisers benefiting meaningful nonprofit organizations, partner with inspiring local business owners, and meet incredible people along the way.
Mahjong and Sonoran Mahjong Co has been a lesson in what happens if you say “yes” to something new, and something uncomfortable. Sonoran Mahjong Co. started as one new mom’s hobby, but it has grown into something far bigger than we ever imagined. We are endlessly grateful for every person who has taken a class, attended an event, partnered with us, or simply cheered us on. Thank you for being part of this journey.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Building a business from the ground up comes with plenty of bumps along the way—from business logistics, finding the right community partners and navigating the unknown to spending evenings away from home and juggling childcare while trying to be present for our families. There have been moments of uncertainty, long days, and a lot of behind-the-scenes work that no one ever sees.
But every challenge has been worth it. Seeing new friendships form around the Mahjong table, watching someone confidently play their first game, and hearing how our events have helped people feel connected to their community reminds us exactly why we started. We truly believe that the best things are built slowly, with heart, and alongside people who believe in your vision. We feel incredibly fortunate that so many of you have chosen to be part of ours.

Sonoran Mahjong Co. is a local Mahjong company based in Phoenix, Arizona, specializing in thoughtfully curated Mahjong experiences. From Beginner Lessons and Open Play events to private gatherings, corporate activations, local fundraisers, and now retail, our goal is to create memorable experiences that bring people together.
Founded by two moms who bonded over their shared love of Mahjong and the joy it brought to their lives, Sonoran Mahjong Co. was built on the belief that Mahjong is about so much more than the game itself. It’s about connection, community, and creating spaces where everyone feels welcome.
