Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronique James.
Hi Veronique, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My founder story actually originates from a moment of desperation. I was in my 20s, working for a large agency, and had gotten married shortly after finishing school. However, the marriage ended in divorce, and I needed to freelance to help cover the expenses related to its dissolution. At the time, I was an art director at a corporate agency, managing major hospitality accounts such as Wyndham Hotels and Resorts and Golden Door Spa.
As a creative, I noticed a lot of tension between the principal of my firm and our clients, largely due to a lack of transparency. There always seemed to be frustration regarding costs and timelines. As my freelance business grew and my personal brand gained recognition within my community, I decided to leave my W-2 employment to focus on my independent contractor journey.
Not long after, I invited some close friends from the same industry to join me, helping to address the capacity challenges I was facing. I found myself taking on numerous roles—I was the pitchman, designer, receptionist, billing clerk, and even coded websites. At one point, it became overwhelming to manage everything on my own.
About a year and a half into this journey, a friend who was a CPA mentioned that the IRS likely wouldn’t approve of me having five or six freelancers working for me nearly full-time, especially since they often came to my house for work and collaboration. That was the moment I officially formed The James Agency overnight.
Fast forward 21 years, and our reputation has grown to make us one of the most well-known integrated strategic agencies in the Southwest.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t believe any entrepreneur would claim that their journey has been a smooth one. There are many aspects of the business experience that aren’t often discussed, particularly the psychology involved, not just the technical trades. I’ve been fortunate to surround myself with amazing leaders, both within my organization and through groups like the Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO). This has allowed me to learn how to navigate the complexities of business, including people operations, client challenges, and financial stability.
After owning a business for 21 years, I’ve faced two significant financial crises: the 2008 crash and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. In both situations, there was no playbook for survival. However, trusting my intuition and leveraging available resources proved invaluable. At each stage of growth, I encountered specific challenges—whether it was improving operational efficiency, scaling the business model, or delegating to a trusted leadership team.
I know there will be many more struggles ahead, but I feel fortunate to have run a business for over two decades, especially given the pressure-tested moments I’ve experienced along the way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The James Agency is a full-service integrated agency located in Scottsdale, Arizona. As a tenured firm, we specialize in both business-to-consumer and business-to-business brands. We prefer the term “business-to-human” because our goal is to connect brands with their target audiences. That’s why our mission statement is: “We make brands matter to people.”
We are particularly recognized for our client experience approach. Large agencies are expected to deliver high-quality execution and results, and our team has won numerous awards across PR, creative, web, social media, production, and more. What sets us apart is how we make our clients feel throughout the journey; we are deeply invested in their businesses and provide full transparency about where their investments and time are going.
Many agencies often take advantage of clients by reporting on vanity metrics, but we believe in bringing our clients along in the process. They are not just in the passenger seat; they are in the driver’s seat, with full visibility into performance metrics, ensuring we are genuinely moving the needle for their business rather than just focusing on numbers.
As a heart-centered, female-owned, and female-led leadership group, we take great pride in the brand and reputation we’ve built as a safe workplace. For several consecutive years, we have been recognized as one of the best places to work locally and have also earned a spot on Inc. Magazine’s list of the Top 500 Best Places to Work nationally.
More importantly, we pride ourselves on being strategic thought partners for our clients. In an age when instant marketing opportunities arise from offshore talent and AI advancements, The James Agency offers a unique value proposition through our work that cannot be replicated by artificial intelligence. We fully integrate ourselves into our clients’ ecosystems, becoming a valued partner beyond just marketing execution. This approach has led to longstanding, trusted client relationships spanning three to fifteen years, with agency leadership tenured for five to nineteen years.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Owning a business definitely teaches a lot of lessons, sometimes multiple in one day and major moments in a year. I believe the most important lesson I’ve learned is that transparency is critical for maintaining a healthy company culture and building trusted partnerships with clients who invest in your products or services.
On a separate note, I have a personal mantra: there is always a way. Throughout my journey, I’ve faced many roadblocks and encountered people telling me “no.” However, I’ve come to realize that there is always an answer or a way to navigate through obstacles. I really enjoy Ryan Holiday’s book, “The Obstacle Is the Way.”
