Today we’d like to introduce you to McKayela Mueller.
Hi McKayela, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
For over a decade, I’ve loved working in pediatric dentistry as a Registered Dental Hygienist, helping children grow not just healthier smiles, but healthier lives. Along the way, I discovered something even bigger: the connection between oral function, breathing, and overall wellness.
My passion for orofacial myofunctional therapy began personally, noticing how my family and I experienced symptoms tied to oral function and airway health. That realization inspired me to dive deep into learning how simple, targeted exercises can create lasting change.
Today, I’m honored to help children and adults in Queen Creek and surrounding areas breathe easier, sleep better, and function optimally. My approach is both clinical and holistic because I believe in addressing the root cause, not just the symptoms.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been completely smooth, but not in the way people might expect. One of the biggest surprises has been just how many individuals—especially children—are dealing with orofacial myofunctional disorders. The need is clearly there, which has made building the practice feel very purposeful rather than difficult.
The more challenging aspect has been the learning curve. Because this field is still emerging, there’s a noticeable gap in standardized education. Orofacial myofunctional disorders aren’t widely covered in traditional dental hygiene programs, so I’ve had to seek out extensive continuing education and learn through hands-on experience. That process has required time, intention, and a lot of self-direction—but it’s also made the work much more meaningful and personal to me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business, Mac Myofunctional Therapy, focuses on helping both children and adults improve their breathing, sleep, and overall function through orofacial myofunctional therapy. At its core, my work is about retraining the muscles of the face, tongue, and airway so they function the way they are meant to, addressing the root cause of issues rather than just managing symptoms.
Many of the individuals I work with come in struggling with mouth breathing, poor sleep, snoring, low energy, tongue ties, or habits like thumb sucking. When oral function improves, it often creates a ripple effect that supports better sleep, improved focus, reduced tension, and an overall higher quality of life.
What sets my practice apart is my personalized, whole person approach. Every client receives an individualized plan based on a comprehensive assessment of their breathing, oral posture, muscle function, and habits. I offer flexible care options including virtual sessions, in office visits, and in home therapy so families can choose what works best for them.
My background in pediatric dentistry combined with advanced training in myofunctional therapy allows me to connect oral health with whole body wellness. This work is also deeply personal to me, as it was inspired by my own family’s experiences. That perspective shapes the level of care and connection I bring to every patient.
Brand wise, I am most proud of creating a space where families feel supported, educated, and empowered. My goal is not only to provide therapy, but to build real relationships and meet patients where they are. I want readers to know that these issues are more common than people think, and that there are effective, lasting solutions that can truly change how you or your child feels every day.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5 to 10 years, I see the myofunctional therapy industry continuing to grow rapidly and becoming much more integrated into mainstream healthcare. Right now, it still feels like an emerging field, but awareness is increasing quickly, especially as more research connects oral function to breathing, sleep, and overall health.
One of the biggest shifts will be the move toward airway-focused care. Dentistry, orthodontics, and even pediatric and medical providers are starting to look beyond teeth and really focus on how someone breathes and develops. Myofunctional therapy plays a key role in that because it addresses the muscle patterns and habits that impact the airway at a foundational level.
I also think we’ll see much more collaboration across disciplines. Instead of working in silos, providers like dental hygienists, orthodontists, ENTs, speech therapists, chiropractors and sleep specialists are beginning to work together to support patients more holistically. Myofunctional therapy fits right in the middle of that team approach.
Another trend is accessibility. Virtual therapy and hybrid models are making care more available to families who may not have access to a provider locally. At the same time, demand for trained therapists is growing, which will likely lead to more formalized education and clearer pathways into the field.
Overall, I see the industry shifting from something people “discover later” to something that is identified and treated earlier, especially in children. The focus will continue moving toward prevention, early intervention, and treating root causes instead of waiting until problems become more complex.
It’s an exciting time because this work is starting to change how we think about oral health, sleep, and whole body wellness.
Pricing:
- When it comes to pricing, one of my biggest priorities is keeping care accessible and approachable for families. I offer a free 15-minute consultation so individuals can ask questions, learn more, and feel confident before committing to anything. From there, the initial assessment is $150 for a full 60-minute, comprehensive evaluation where we look at breathing, oral function, habits, and overall goals. This allows me to create a very personalized therapy plan rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. Ongoing therapy is then tailored to each individual, both in terms of care and cost. Because every patient’s needs are different, pricing is based on a customized plan, and I offer flexible payment options to make it manageable for families. I also provide multiple ways to receive care, including virtual sessions, in-office visits, and in-home therapy, so families can choose what works best for their schedule and lifestyle. At the end of the day, my goal is to make this type of care feel doable, not overwhelming. I want families to know that investing in airway health, sleep, and proper function is not only valuable, but something that can truly change day-to-day life for both children and adults.
