Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Norris.
Hi Jonathan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been drawn to storytelling and creating art. Even as a young child, I spent a lot of time writing stories and using my imagination. That creative instinct followed me into high school, where I discovered a love for graphic design. While working on the yearbook team, I was handed a camera and asked to take sports photos, and that moment completely changed things for me. I fell in love with photography.
At first, it was something I did just for myself, capturing landscapes and moments with family. It wasn’t until my first child was born that photography took on a deeper meaning. We hired a photographer for newborn photos, and while we loved the images, we realized we’d have to pay extra to receive more of them. That experience pushed me to pick up my camera with a new purpose; I wanted to capture those moments myself. Vowing to never charge extra for photo packages.
From there, everything grew organically. What started as a personal desire to document my own life turned into offering my services to others. Along the way, I rekindled my love for photography and discovered a passion for telling stories through this medium. In many ways, I still carry that childlike wonder I had when I first started creating, only now, instead of using a pen, I use my lens to tell those stories.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Like most creative journeys, there have been moments of uncertainty and growth along the way. Early on, one of the biggest challenges was confidence learning to trust my eye, my style, and the value of my work. It’s easy to compare yourself to others, especially in a field as visual as photography, so finding my own voice took time. In photography, there is a saying, “If you take a hundred photos, ten of them will be good, only one will be great. I think that applies to life as well. You will try things that don’t work, but you just keep trying until you get the one that does.
Balancing life and creativity has also been a challenge, especially as a parent. Juggling family responsibilities while building something of my own required a lot of patience and flexibility. There were also the practical hurdles of learning the business side of photography, investing in equipment, figuring out pricing, and putting myself out there. As Thomas Edison once said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
But each of those challenges has shaped me. They pushed me to grow not just as a photographer, but as a person. Looking back, I wouldn’t call it a smooth road, but it’s been a meaningful one, and every obstacle has played a part in getting me to where I am today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work is centered around storytelling, capturing genuine moments in a way that feels honest, emotional, and timeless. I specialize in lifestyle and portrait photography, with a strong focus on families, children, and the in-between moments that often go unnoticed. I’m drawn to natural light, real connections, and creating images that feel less posed and more like a memory you can step back into.
What I’ve become known for, I think, is that balance between artistry and authenticity. I want my photos to look beautiful, but more importantly, I want them to feel real. Whether it’s a quiet moment between a parent and child or the energy of a family just being themselves, I aim to tell those stories in a way that resonates.
What I’m most proud of is the trust people place in me. Being invited into someone’s life to document meaningful moments is something I don’t take lightly. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that the images I create become part of someone’s story and something they’ll hold onto for years.
What sets me apart is my approach. I don’t just show up to take photos, I show up to connect, to understand the people in front of my lens, and to create a space where they feel comfortable being themselves. That connection, combined with my lifelong love of storytelling, is really at the heart of everything I do.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I definitely haven’t done this alone. My wife has been my biggest source of support from the very beginning. She has encouraged me to keep going, given me the time and space to grow, and trusted me to capture some of our most meaningful moments as I was learning and evolving. That support has meant everything, especially while balancing both family life and building a business.
My clients have also played a huge role in my journey. Every person who has trusted me to document their story has helped shape my work and pushed me to grow. Their willingness to invite me into such personal moments is something I’m incredibly grateful for, and their feedback and referrals have been a big part of how my photography has expanded.
I’ve also been inspired by other photographers and creatives like Noah Ray, Shane Baker, and Peter McKinnon, even if not always in a formal mentor role. Studying their work, learning from their experiences, and seeing different approaches to storytelling have helped me refine my own style and perspective.
And I would be wrong not to mention my good friend Allison, who has been with me since day one, agreeing to model for me just so I can practice, and continues to support me in building this business
It’s really been a combination of encouragement, trust, and inspiration from the people around me that has allowed me to get to where I am today.
