Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Nichols.
Stephanie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was drawn to medicine because of my own health journey. I spent years dealing with health issues and feeling frustrated by how few answers I received from conventional care. It wasn’t until I worked with a naturopathic doctor that things finally started to make sense… and that experience changed everything for me.
I initially began my education in dietetics, which was incredibly informative and inspiring. But in the final year of the program, I felt limited by how rigid the approach was. We were essentially handed the food guide and told, this is how you coach people to eat. I knew instinctively there was so much more to nutrition, food sensitivities, individual intolerances, and the powerful role food can play in both healing the body and, in some cases, contributing to illness.
That realization made me want to be more involved at the front line of patient care. I wanted to understand the why behind symptoms, not just manage them. I also recognized that conventional medical training often includes very little nutrition education and allows limited time with patients. I knew I wanted to practice differently, with an integrated, personalized approach that prioritizes listening, connection, and understanding how all symptoms are interconnected. Most importantly, I wanted my patients to feel truly heard and supported, and to see real, meaningful results.
After completing my training, I worked for another doctor in Canada, which turned out to be a very difficult experience. It ultimately pushed me to consider opening my own practice — something I might not have done without the encouragement of my husband, who reminded me, you don’t lack anything that anyone else has – you can absolutely do this. And so I did.
Today, my husband and I work together as naturopathic doctors, and our practice has grown exponentially each year. We’re incredibly proud of the impact we’ve had, the community we’ve built, and the trust our patients place in us. Much of our growth has come through referrals, which means everything to us. It tells us our patients not only feel better, but feel confident enough in their care to recommend us to their friends, family, and loved ones.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t describe the journey as smooth, it was very much a season of constant grinding. In the beginning, we had no patients, which meant we had to go out and find them. That looked like endless networking, community outreach, and taking on side work, including medical writing and contract jobs – just to pay the bills.
During that first phase, I did everything. I designed the clinic, handled marketing, cleaned the space, answered phones, billed insurance, managed finances, and of course, saw patients. When you’re funding everything yourself and resources are limited, hard work and sweat equity become the currency.
Despite the challenges, we became profitable within our first year and have grown exponentially ever since. Looking back, I’m grateful for how hands-on those early days were. I learned how to run Google ads, build and code websites, navigate commercial real estate, and communicate effectively with patients from the very first phone call. While I’ve since built strong relationships with experts in areas like marketing and web development, learning to do it all myself first allowed me to truly understand, vet, and scale the business intentionally.
Those challenges were exhausting at times, but they strengthened me as both a doctor and an entrepreneur. Without that difficult season, I don’t think I would be where I am today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Onyx Integrative Medicine and Aesthetics?
At Onyx Integrative Medicine & Aesthetics, we practice a deeply personalized, relationship-driven approach to healthcare. Our work goes far beyond treating symptoms; we take the time to truly know our patients, understand their stories, and build long-term partnerships rooted in trust. The relationships we form are the foundation of everything we do; our patients are not just appointments on a schedule, they are people we genuinely care about and walk alongside in their healing.
We specialize in integrative care for complex concerns like hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, anxiety, chronic fatigue, and metabolic health, using a blend of functional testing, targeted nutrition, natural therapies, and modern medicine. What sets us apart is the time, attention, and intention we bring to every visit. I’m most proud of the community we’ve built, one where patients feel heard, supported, and empowered, and where the care extends beyond the clinic walls and into meaningful, lasting relationships.
