We recently had the chance to connect with Katie Grear and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Katie, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day are all about being a mom and a business owner at the same time. I wake up my daughter and get her ready for school, and while she’s eating breakfast or brushing her teeth, I’m usually multitasking — checking messages, emails, and new bookings for Inked & Bound. It’s a mix of mom-mode and CEO-mode, and I kind of love that it grounds me before I step into the creative chaos of the shop.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Inked & Bound began in 2023 with a simple idea: blend the intimacy of fine-line tattooing with the comfort and creativity of an indie bookstore. What makes us unique is our dual identity — we’re a space where artistry, storytelling, and community collide. From delicate, intentional tattoos to our curated selection of new and used books, we’ve created a place that feels both inspiring and deeply personal. Inked & Bound stands out because it isn’t just a shop — it’s an experience, a haven for people who love art, books, and connection. We just launched our book club and Art Gallery Pop Up too!
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My husband. He saw me clearly long before I ever fully saw myself. As a fellow entrepreneur, he’s always encouraged my creative side and pushed me to dream bigger than I thought I could. Inked & Bound wouldn’t exist without his unwavering support.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t shrink yourself. The things that make you different are the things that will build your future.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
In both tattooing and books, fads burn bright and vanish. Fundamental shifts stick because they meet a deeper need — connection, creativity, community. If it aligns with how people want to feel, not just what they want to buy, it’s a real shift.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I think people may assume my legacy is about tattoos or books, but really it’s about community. Inked & Bound was never just a business — it was a space built for people to feel seen, welcomed, and inspired. My legacy isn’t the brand; it’s the feeling it gave people.
