Story & Lesson Highlights with Karrie Idstein of Phoenix/ Scottsdale

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Karrie Idstein. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Karrie, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Paddleboarding on the Salt River makes me lose track of time and rejuvenates my mind and soul. I love being out in nature surrounded by the mountains, water, and wildlife.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My father taught me at an early age to be responsible, independent, knowledgeable, and took the time to show me how to complete tasks which I would have to complete in real life when I left the house on my own life adventures. From changing the oil or tire on my car to balancing a checkbook and filling out tax forms. He has always been one of the hardest working people I know, and his actions taught me to work hard for everything I want or need in life.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Failure has always been a fear that lingers in the back of my mind—an invisible weight that sometimes makes me second-guess myself or hesitate to take bold steps. It’s that voice that whispers, “What if you’re doing too much?” or “What if it doesn’t work out?” But I’ve learned that letting fear dictate my choices only leads to missed opportunities. After the internal battle I typically have with myself, I give myself a pep talk and try to flip the script—I let the fear of failure fuel me. I use it as a reminder that if I’m scared, it probably means I care deeply and that I’m pushing myself outside of my comfort zone. It’s not easy, but I’ve found that when I lean in and keep moving forward, I grow stronger, more resilient, and more determined to prove to myself that I can rise above it.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I would have to say Jeanie Buss, the owner and president of the Los Angeles Lakers. She has carved out a powerful legacy in a space long dominated by men. As the first female controlling owner to leading an NBA team to a championship, she has inspired so many women in business and in the sports industry. She faced numerous adversities such as the internal family conflicts, navigating public scrutiny, and social media rage, just to name a few. Despite all of it she remained focused, resilient, and committed to her vision. After the Lakers won the 2020 Championship, she solidified her place as a trailblazer for women in sports and a very capable executive owner in the NBA.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I give my best daily regardless if I am praised by anyone or not. It’s my life motto.
