An Inspired Chat with Michael Olivas of Tempe

Michael Olivas shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Michael, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Each day brings something different, but since I started working full time in photography, every day feels like a new journey. The other morning, I woke up at 3:30 am to photograph a bloody nun series alongside Irene Silver and her assistant Emilio. When I’m not taking pictures, I enjoy watching It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and editing my photos while snacking on hummus and baby carrots!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, and relocated to Phoenix, AZ, in early 2020. Throughout my childhood, I was surrounded by musicians and artists who greatly impacted my life. I’ve always had a strong inclination towards photography, and I finally have the chance to pursue my passion. I began with street photography as a teenager. A close friend of mine later asked me to photograph his band, and now I’m doing what I truly love! My work primarily focuses on the queer scene, featuring drag queens, drag kings, and various performers. Additionally, I serve as a manager for Phoenix Pride and im their main photographer. Currently, I’m working on a book titled “Face Meets Glass,” which explores the lives of drag performers and how they express their art to the world. I also engage in concert photography and creative shoots.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My good friend Vader Camacho.. he really pushed me over the edge to deep dive into photography.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Failure, but I’ve learned that it’s ok to fail.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Everyone should be treated with respect until proven otherwise. I firmly believe in being pro choice and we need to protect all LGBTQIA communities!!

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Stop Holding back and traveling the world. I’ve been to Norway and Japan is next!
