We recently had the chance to connect with Alejandra Montaño and have shared our conversation below.
Alejandra, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
This fall, I’ll be opening my own gallery on 4th Avenue in downtown Tucson. It’s the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, a way to honor my parents, inspire my son, and celebrate my community through art. I’m excited to create a space that reflects both my roots and creative vision, and to share it with Tucson.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Alejandra Arte Galería is the creative vision of a self-taught Mexican-American artist raised in Tucson’s historic Barrio Viejo. Defined by bold strokes, vibrant colors, and unapologetic self-expression, my work reflects both heritage and individuality. More than a gallery, Alejandra Arte will serve as a cultural hub—a place for exhibitions, art classes, and live music, where the community can come together to celebrate creativity and connection.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My parents. Long before I believed in my own potential, they did. My dad would always remind me, “The world is your oyster, mija—you have the power to do anything you set your mind to.” They nurtured every wild idea I dared to dream and instilled in me the values of hard work, resilience, faith, and courage. Their love and guidance are what carried me to where I am today.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Something I would tell my younger self: You don’t need to have your whole life figured out by your 20s. Life will throw hurdles your way, and all you can do is roll with the punches. Everything has divine timing, and life unfolds as it’s meant to. Learn the lessons so you don’t repeat them. Focus on what fills you up and keeps you grounded. Don’t take life too seriously—have fun, enjoy it. Life is short, beautiful, and meant to be lived without regrets.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
I show up as I am. Authenticity matters. What you see is what you get.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
My life was my art—bringing people together, living boldly, and finding joy in every step. I hope my son carries that same spirit, with kindness and love.
