Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Colin Bakewell

We recently had the chance to connect with Colin Bakewell and have shared our conversation below.

Colin, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I have been playing guitar for Chalako The Band in Tucson, Arizona and we have really been sounding our best lately. We played at Tesoro Kitchen on Oracle Road, near The Tucson Mall on Saturday, the 8th of November, and everyone had a great time. I am so happy to be a part of this band right now.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Colin Bakewell, I am 44 years old. I have been playing music most of my life. I play electric guitar for Chalako The Band in Tucson, Arizona. What makes it unique is that we play songs with English and Spanish lyrics. We have male and a female lead vocalists. They have great voices and have carried the band very well at many places around Tucson. I grew up in Michigan before moving to Tucson. We are working on new songs all of the time. Right now they are Fruta Fresca and Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was very young, I cared only about Classical Music. I wanted so badly to play the violin and piano. As I grew older, my habits changed and I play the electric guitar more than anything.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me the money is hard to come by. I failed a lot, especially in my early twenties. I did not graduate from college and I feel like I wasted a lot of my parent’s time.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I think they would say that I have worked hard since I moved to Tucson. I help people with special needs and I have a goodtime doing it. I have worked some long days and have not worried about my losses when I have been able to lend a hand.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I was someone who they could count on. I have put my best into what I have been doing and feel good about the results.
