We’re looking forward to introducing you to Sarah Simpson. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
Jokingly, I’d have to say we’re wandering. I mean, it’s in our name. Woodland Wanderland. But, all kidding aside, I’d say we’re walking a beautiful path full of wander.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sarah. My husband, Justin, and I own and operate Woodland Wanderland in Pinetop, AZ. Justin oversees the daily operations and I’ve taken a more behind the sense approach at this time as the artist behind our preserved nature collection. Woodland Wanderland is a brick and mortar oddities and curiosities shop. We also offer an online presence.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I remember being injured from being a wilderness guide and being home working a desk job feeling depressed when I stopped and asked myself what brings me joy. For me it’s nature, I remember thinking “I’ve seen people create art out of preserved butterflies…I wonder if people would ever consider buying art or butterflies from me?” I revived an order of butterflies and they were all gone in about 15 minutes. I sold out! And, I knew I was onto something. That was such a powerful moment.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
As a mental health therapist in solo private practice in addition to owning Woodland Wanderland, I help people connect with their inner child all the time. I’d say I’ve become best friends with my younger self at this point. I tell her I’m sorry for all that she faced but how wonderful she turned out. I honor her. I celebrate her. I tell her she’s amazing. She’s always been capable of amazing things.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. I’m very authentic in the way I live. When I’m authentic and raw people see it as a validation to be their authentic selves.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
I would regret not opening my business. As difficult as some moments have been, as they are with any small business, I am so honored to be part of Woodland Wonderland’s story.
