Sean Casey shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Sean, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Without a doubt, content creation and social media marketing. I am normally pretty reserved and not one to put myself out there, but in the modern world, especially in motorsports, it is critical to master content creation. Without it, and the reach and authentic engagement it creates, there is little chance of providing a truly viable return on investment (ROI) for potential sponsors. Of course, no ROI means no sponsorship. Getting this dialed in is a critical component of by my own and Fetterhund Motorsports plans to expand the team and move into new markets.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Sean Casey, owner of Fetterhund Motorsports. I am also a full-time law enforcement supervisor. I have built my personal racing brand, as well as that of Fetterhund Motorsports around the concept that “racing is for everyone.” I know the challenges of finding an opportunity, the pain of losing out on chances, and seek to create those opportunities for others. I have sponsored new drivers in my team’s car, to get them in the door of the sport. Several have gone on to continue in motorsports at different levels.
Racing isn’t just a hobby or even just a business, it is a lifestyle. It is in my blood and is my passion, so I do what I can to share that passion with others. I love seeing people get excited about racing!
The big move right now is that we are expanding the team from one car to three cars, so we’re very busy. On top of this we are working on expanding our social media reach and engagement to better support out expansion and create a viable opportunity for potential sponsors to see a viable return.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I have really always just been me. I probably have a bit of a rebellious streak, and have never let others define me, even if my resistance to it has at time made for its own set of difficulties. I believe in being authentic and true to myself. I have found that the people who follow along in my journey through life and are walking my path with me; they don’t do it because I became who someone else told me to me. They are with me in life because they believe in me and what I stand for, even on those difficult days where my belief in myself waivers. It helps me feel confident that forging my own path in life was the correct choice.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Probably every single day. I am human after all. To doubt oneself and contemplating giving up and taking the easy road is a natural emotion. The crazy thing about it, is that it isn’t always the fear of failure that creates the doubt. Many times, it is the fear of success. People often fear seeing themselves as successful because if the accomplished everything they ever wanted in life, then everything in their life would be totally different. That fear can be paralyzing and leads to thoughts that become self-defeating “I can’t do this,” “I’m not good enough.” It often gets interpreted as fear of failure, but it is, instead, the mind building doubt because it is afraid of the changes success can bring, so by setting itself up for failure, it finds comfort in not facing the unknowns of success.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
With out a doubt and said with no reservation or hesitation. For better or worse, the Sean Casey the public gets is as real as it gets. Sure, there are some feelings and discussions I keep to a close circle and don’t need to blast out to the world, but that is still authentic to me.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I have to. Ultimately, I am inside my own head 24/7 and I have to be able to sleep at night. I don’t do what I do because I expect praise. I do it because I chose to follow this path and if I can’t put full effort into my own life, who else will? The reward comes from working hard, getting results, overcoming the failures, and through it all, treating people well and always trying to do what is right and just.
