We’re looking forward to introducing you to Rachel Shepherd. Check out our conversation below.
Rachel, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
One thing that allows me to lose track of time and find myself again has been junk journaling. I love being able to collect little pieces of my day and create something beautiful from it. I am able to stick and paste things however I see fit. I have been attending a local junk journal club and will be crafting for hours
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Rachel. I love to photograph eras and milestones of life. Being able to document is my connection to my work. I’m a storyteller with photos. Loft Six Collective is my brand and it is all me – clean, classic, and timeless. From photos, to magnets, and digital art, you’ll find the collective of my creativity. LSC is a dream over a decade in the works and I’m beyond proud of where I am with it. It has become something I feel like is limitless and that’s all I could have asked for
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I have a photo of a little me in a tutu, dancing on the coffee table barefoot and wild on the wall of my bathroom. It’s a reminder to myself I get to see every day of who I was before the world told me who I had to be. I think about her every day and I try to live for her.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Of course! I’m a human. I, maybe a few months ago, told my fiancé “Okay, that’s it! I’m done!”
…I definitely just needed a minute to have a meltdown but I can’t say the thought of giving up didn’t came across my mind before.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie my industry tells itself is that the market is over saturated. It definitely is, don’t get me wrong, but I always believe there is a photographer for everyone. There is a style someone likes or the experience they receive that is unique to each person.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
My places of peace are the ocean, the mountains, and the forest. The ocean specifically at Mission Beach, the mountains specifically in Sedona, and the forest specifically in Flagstaff.
