We recently had the chance to connect with Janet Cabral and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Janet, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
Thank you for having me. I am thrilled to announce that we are actively building a sense of community through our passion for plants. Each month, we host a variety of events, including workshops, private gatherings, and markets, designed to bring together individuals with similar interests.
Whether it’s a “Paint a Pot” session for children or a “Knot-Your-Art” team-building event, we take pride in providing a welcoming space for everyone. Our offerings extend beyond the sale of houseplants and pottery; we are dedicated to nurturing friendships and connections within our community.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Janet, and I’m the proud owner of Little Plant Market. It’s been an amazing journey realizing my passion, one that’s still unfolding. My husband and I have always dreamed of starting our own business, and after a lot of talk and thought, a plant shop seemed like the perfect fit. My motivation stemmed from a desire to cultivate a green environment for my son, teaching him the importance of patience as he witnesses growth. I always envisioned a space that went beyond a typical plant store—a “market” where local artisans could showcase their work, and the community could gather for events. My goal wasn’t merely to sell plants; I wanted to foster connections, share knowledge, and ignite passion. The past year and a half, collaborating and creating with the West Valley community, has been truly rewarding.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I always had a sense of power when I would finish a performance. I used to be in ballet and theater and loved ending a dance or a scene.
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
For a long time I tried really hard at working for the corporate world. I had a lot of jobs and I was good at them, but I absolutely hated it. Not so much as “failing hard” as just really having an understanding that I needed to be working for something I cared and loved or I wouldn’t ever feel content. Plus the corporate world didn’t come with getting my hands dirty in soil everyday.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, absolutely 100% real! I believe it’s essential to be authentic in a small business. I’m building a community in the West Valley, and I’m seeking genuine interest and friendships. It wouldn’t function if I had to pretend. My business feels like a second child; I pour my heart and soul into this plant shop, and it truly reflects who I am.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
I think they would miss the joy Rafa and I bring each day! We are happy and excited when people walk through the doors. Also the events, we do plant workshops and small events each month and I think locals would be sad if that stopped.
