Stephen Barnett shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Stephen, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I’m being called to lead with more courage and authenticity than ever before. For years, I felt the weight of needing everything to be perfect before taking the next step — but growth doesn’t come from comfort. Now, I’m embracing the unknown, trusting my vision, and allowing myself to be seen. Whether it’s stepping into larger stages, leading teams, or sharing my story through Island Boba, I’m no longer afraid of being stretched. I’m being called to walk boldly in purpose and to create impact beyond what I once thought possible
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Stephen Barnett, and I’m the Operations Manager at Island Boba, a family-run beverage brand bringing a taste of the islands to Arizona. The business began as a brick-and-mortar shop founded by a mutual friend, and after hearing about the opportunity, I joined to help grow it into a mobile concept.
We serve handcrafted, dairy-free, caffeine-free lemonade-boba drinks at schools, markets, Arizona Athletic Grounds, and community events across the Valley. What makes Island Boba unique is the energy we bring — great drinks, music, and a sense of connection that turns every pop-up into an experience.
Our focus now is expansion — building partnerships, creating opportunities for youth engagement, and laying the foundation for future franchises that carry that same aloha spirit wherever we go.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a kid, I believed I had to have everything figured out — that success meant following a straight path without mistakes. Over time, I’ve learned that growth doesn’t come from perfection; it comes from persistence. Every setback, every pivot, every “restart” has taught me something valuable about who I am and what I’m capable of. I no longer believe I need all the answers — I just need the courage to keep moving forward and the faith to trust the process.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Being raised solely by my grandmother and losing friends in the Marine Corps were the defining wounds of my life. Those losses taught me about pain, loyalty, and resilience. Healing came when I stopped hiding the hurt and started turning it into purpose — through music, mentorship, and building communities like Island Boba. Now, every smile we bring and every connection we create is part of that healing — a reminder that even pain can be transformed into something that uplifts others.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes — the public version of me is the real me, just more focused. What people see — the energy, drive, and purpose — all come from real experiences and lessons that shaped who I am. I’ve learned to lead with authenticity, so whether I’m behind the booth at Island Boba or speaking to students, it’s always the same person — just with a clearer sense of why I’m doing it.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Honestly, I wouldn’t slow down — I’d go even harder, but I’d make sure I was closer to my family while doing it. The drive wouldn’t change, but the location and the moments would matter more. I’d want every step forward to be shared with the people who mean the most.
