Exploring Life & Business with Holly Nelson of The Connection Couch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Nelson.

Hi Holly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I became a therapist because of the positive, life-changing experiences I had with therapy as a teenager; it helped me through some of my most difficult years. My path to sex therapy happened almost by accident. During my internship, I started at a clinic focused primarily on children, but quickly realized that work wasn’t the right fit for me. I transferred to a clinic where my supervisor was completing her AASECT Sex Therapy Certification, and under her guidance, I began working with individuals and couples facing sexual concerns. I was hooked; it was the most rewarding and energizing work I had ever done.

That experience inspired me to pursue my own AASECT Sex Therapy Certification and eventually open my private practice, where I help individuals and couples navigate sexual anxiety, shame, pain, and trauma. Growing up in an oppressive religious community, I understand firsthand how deeply these wounds can run, and how transformative it can be to find healing, confidence, and joy in one’s sexual self.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been privileged in many ways; I didn’t face barriers getting into the college programs I wanted, and I was able to apply for loans to fund my education. Where the road has felt a little bumpier is in the middle of the journey, when you’re already chasing a goal and the initial excitement wears off. I took breaks during college to travel and enjoy life (another reflection of my privilege), but that also meant it took me a little longer to reach the finish line.

When I launched my private practice in November 2024, learning how to market effectively was its own challenge; it required time, trial, and error, as well as a financial investment in myself. There have absolutely been moments where things didn’t go the way I envisioned, but staying consistent has been key. That persistence is finally starting to pay off.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Connection Couch ?
My practice, The Connection Couch, is a place where individuals and couples can explore, heal, and grow their relationship with sex and intimacy in a safe, nonjudgmental space. I specialize in helping people navigate sexual anxiety, shame, pain, and trauma, especially those who have experienced oppressive sexual messaging or religious conditioning that made pleasure feel out of reach.

What sets me apart is that I combine my EMDR certification with advanced sex therapy training through AASECT, which allows me to address both the emotional roots and the practical aspects of sexual concerns. My approach is compassionate, trauma-informed, and deeply personalized—no cookie-cutter advice, no pressure to “perform,” just a space to help people feel safe, confident, and connected in their own skin and with their partners.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that The Connection Couch is known for being approachable and real. Sex can be a sensitive topic, and my mission is to remove the shame and make conversations about pleasure, connection, and healing as normal as talking about physical health. I want readers to know that sexual struggles are incredibly common, they’re nothing to be ashamed of, and that support is available. Whether it’s anxiety in the bedroom, difficulty communicating about sex, or healing after trauma, there is always a way forward—and you don’t have to navigate it alone.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
People can work with me directly through individual or couples sex therapy, offered in Scottsdale, AZ, and online for Arizona residents. Whether it’s addressing sexual anxiety, healing after trauma, or reigniting intimacy, I create a safe, personalized space for growth and connection.

For professionals, I’m always open to collaborations, whether that’s guest podcasting, speaking at events, contributing to articles or blogs, or partnering with healthcare providers to better support patients’ sexual well-being. I also love connecting with other therapists for cross-referrals when our specialties align.

To support my work, readers can share my resources with anyone who might benefit, whether that’s my free handouts, blog posts, or TikTok educational videos (@sextherapywithholly). Spreading shame-free, trauma-informed sexual health education is at the heart of what I do, and every share helps.
