Today, we’d like to introduce you to Kendall Grant-Ashworth.
Hi Kendall, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Howdy! I’m Kendall and I’m originally from Las Vegas, Nevada, and moved to Arizona back in 2017. Stained glass first struck my interest back in 2019.
I followed this artist on Instagram, @twiggylevy, who did stained glass, and I thought, damn, “I need to learn how to do that!” So I bought a kit, watched a bunch of YouTube videos, and taught myself. I still have that intrusive thought in my head, “I have no idea what I’m doing.” Hahaha.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think my biggest struggle was actually getting started. When I decided to try out stained glass, I found out I was pregnant, and maybe working with lead with a baby in my stomach wasn’t a great idea. So, I didn’t actually start until after I had my daughter in July of 2020.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I feel like I make what I want. I try and drift away from basic designs that I see a lot of artists in general do.
Also, After doing stained glass for a couple of years and going to markets to sell my pieces, I realized I wanted to put on my own market! Making it about the ARTIST, ART forward and not overcharging for booth prices that too many markets do.
So my friend Tyler Coburn and I, who I work with at Casey Moores Oyster House in Tempe, worked with our owner, and he let us set up The Back Alley Market in his smaller parking lot. I love helping out and having this little collective art community! It feels great to bring something positive like this to Tempe.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I feel like I pay intense attention to detail.
I don’t like to take on any commissions if I feel like I can’t execute the piece to my own standards. I’m also willing to learn a new technique at any point if it means improving my art and processes. So basically just your average mom.
