Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Comingore.
Hi Jessica, can you introduce yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles, surrounded by a family with a knack for creativity. Looking back, I was definitely always drawn to design, but it wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I seriously considered it as a career path.
During my college exploration phase, a tour of a design school really opened my eyes to the possibilities. It felt like like finding my people—others who saw the world through a creative lens like I did. After graduating with degrees in interior design, decorative arts, and product design from FIDM, I landed a job as a Junior Interior Designer at an architecture firm on the west side of LA, and that’s where things started to click for me.
Outside of my day job, I’d often find myself playing around on the computer at home, which eventually led me to start a lifestyle blog in 2008 when blogging was still in its early stages. It became this space where I could flex my creativity and explore other mediums like graphic design and photography. Then came 2012, and I decided to leap into freelancing. I remember it being a bit nerve-wracking at the time but also incredibly exciting. I used my blog as a launchpad, and before I knew it, I was juggling clients and getting approached by brands for collaborations. Freelancing really opened my eyes to the intersection of creativity and entrepreneurship. It was this realization of, ”Hey, I can make a living doing what I love.” After five years, the idea for Marbury took shape—a branding agency specializing in building legacy brands for the interior and lifestyle space.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been anything but smooth sailing, but then again, isn’t that life? As cliché as it sounds, each bump along the road has been a chance to learn, grow, and really strengthen my character. Over the past twelve years, I’ve faced my fair share of challenges—from battling burnout and imposter syndrome to navigating financial literacy and the ebb and flow of client acquisition. Growing a team at various stages brought its highs but came with the challenging moments of letting go. Launching new ventures was exhilarating, but there were also the realities of closing chapters. I always tell people that entrepreneurship is a constant journey of trial and adaptation, with each year feeling like a crash course in problem-solving and resilience. The path has been far from smooth or linear, but I’ve come to embrace it as my story. The twists and turns are what make life rich.
Thanks for sharing that. Please tell us more about your work.
I lead Marbury, a boutique branding agency that partners with entrepreneurs at various stages of their journey to craft story-rich branding. Our process begins by aligning their vision with a robust brand strategy, which lays the groundwork for developing their brand identity. From there, we ensure consistency across all of their brand’s touchpoints—print, digital, packaging, and web—to effectively engage their target audience and position them for long-term growth.
What excites me most is the strategic aspect of our work. As someone who’s both creatively and analytically inclined, I really thrive at the intersection of psychology and design. While aesthetics are important to me, I’m a firm believer that effective design is guided by purpose and functionality. In today’s saturated market, brands have to offer more than just products and services—they need to provide solutions to real-life problems. I take pride in diving deep with our clients, uncovering their unique stories, and identifying what sets them apart in a sea of competitors. Translating these narratives into designs that not only look good but resonate on a deeper level is incredibly rewarding.
One of my proudest achievements is seeing the brand identities we crafted a decade ago evolve and adapt alongside our clients’ businesses today. People often ask what makes me different as a designer, and while I understand the importance of trends, I’m really committed to creating brands that stand the test of time. Longevity is at the core of my design philosophy, and I always strive to imbue our work with a timeless quality that ensures relevancy for years to come.
How do you define success?
To me, success is about finding fulfillment in your daily work while being compensated in a way that supports a balanced and gratifying life. It’s taken me time to fully understand that entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint. In a world inundated with messages glorifying achievement and 24/7 wins, it’s really important to take a step back and acknowledge that sustainable success requires finding a rhythm that prioritizes personal well-being. A balance where you can disengage at the end of the day, immerse yourself in individual pursuits and pleasure, and recharge your energy. Then, we can come back to our work with a fresh perspective and genuine excitement to confront new challenges.
