Today we’d like to introduce you to Dutch Holly. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Dutch Holly is a duo of independent recording artists and performers Jen Juniper and Tres Ikner. We recently released an indie-pop single, “Let the Light In,” with an accompanying video. “Let the Light In” has enjoyed regional success and is rotating on several college and independent radio stations throughout the American Southwest. There has never been a better time to be an indie artist playing dance and electronic music. Traveling around Arizona, we connect with people who love what we do everywhere we play! It’s fascinating to us to find resonance with a larger community.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Remaining truly independent as recording artists has been challenging, but we’ve discovered that independence affords us the most creative freedom. That’s why we make it a point to produce all our music, videos, and artwork ourselves. We’ve had to learn and develop many skills along the way and practice much patience with ourselves and each other. Many artists rely on others to do their web or graphic design work, and some professionals make an entire career in studio recording or video production. We do all that production work ourselves because we have a particular vision for Dutch Holly, and we’ve found a lot of truth to the saying, “If you want something done right, do it yourself.” If our work hasn’t always been done “right” by conventional standards, at least it has been done exactly the way we intend. And it’s gratifying when we finish a song or video authentically true to the original vision.
Thanks for sharing that. Please tell us more about your work.
As independent recording artists, we have written, recorded, and released two EPs and are working now on a full-length album, due out in 2024. We have also created several music videos for our previous releases and four music videos for the past four singles we have released. Those singles will be on the upcoming album. Dutch Holly is known for a dreamy, ethereal indie-pop sound that employs dance beats and distinctly psychedelic instrumentation. At live shows, Jen Juniper sings lead and plays percussion while Tres Ikner plays guitar and keyboards and kicks beats, loops, and samples using a complex electronic setup we’ve developed over the years. The result is a wholly original and dance-able sound frequently described as indie-tronica. What we’re most proud of is the success of our partnership. We are a married couple and are parents, and our partnership has produced Dutch Holly and a beautiful son, Max, who is the light of our life and a happy, harmonious home.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
As recording and performance artists, success happens when we can complete a work authentic to the original vision and when it resonates with someone who hears or sees it. When the audience feels something profound and undeniable inside themselves because they resonate with what we’re doing, we’ve succeeded.
