Life & Work with Brittny Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittny Johnson.

Hi Brittny, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always admired Madame C.J. Walker and Annie Malone’s tenacity to help women become beautiful inside and out, and in return they each built their own story in history. Women like the aforementioned made the dream possible. Thus, in high school, I took an interest to chemistry, and I would mix household ingredients in my mother’s kitchen. I would make lip balm, body butters, hair butter, simple stuff. The passion grew into a bachelor’s then master’s degree in chemistry, an internship at L’Oréal. When I was not in the lab I was playing in the kitchen. I started making hot process soap, it was fun, it was practical, and it produced results. However, it wasn’t something I did all the time, it was something fun to do.

Fast forward to four years ago, I started making soap again, once again it was something fun to do and make for my family, but this time I progressed my skills to cold process soap making. I did copious amounts of research and realized this is more than something fun to do this is truly a science. I formulate bars based on the art and science of soap making, I look for ingredients that are moisturizing and nourishing, using ingredients you can find in your garden, or kitchen. Then Trades of Brit was born.

I came up with the name Trades of Brit because I was always told I was a “Jack (Jill) of all Trades” and for a long time I took offense, because I thought people were saying I was a jack of all trades and a master of none,” but I didn’t know the entire quote. “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” I learned that was a compliment. Today, I have doubled my fun and created a body business, where every day I am using my profession and my passion using natural ingredients, essential oils, butters, oils, food, herbs, clay, anything that can benefit the skin naturally.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I am just starting this journey, and I have been in business for less than a year, so there is so much more to experience and so far the road is smooth.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I educate chemistry students at the high school and college level. I have been an educator for the past six years. The thing that sets me apart from others is my passion to connect to students. I push my students, they may not like it in the moment, but they appreciate it in the future. I strive for greatness and they expect the same from me.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I ask questions, I put myself out there. Like they say, “closed mouths don’t get feed.” At the end of the day, I would rather ask and get a response than not ask and never know the response.
