Inspiring Conversations with LaTosha Davis of The Confident Black Girl

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaTosha Davis.

Hi LaTosha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a small town girl with big dreams and vision. I have been a mother since I was 16 years old. I have suffered more losses than most can even imagine,. From homelessness, abuse, living without lights or gas or water. The losses did not break me. They motivated me to learn, build, and repair myself over and over again. After every loss, I won. We all win when we choose to learn from the challenges of life and not let them define us. I define me. I have persevered and pushed continuously to grow into the beautiful being that I am.

Even when I thought I would die, when the losses felt so heavy I could not breathe I pushed forward. I went from making $8 an hour to having my first 6 figure year in 2020. It didn’t happen overnight and it took years of learning the lessons, failing and picking myself up. It took tears, it took blood but we made it.

Now, I teach women how to take back their power. We want women to be empowered by their losses and able to reclaim their time, love, confidence, health, and build the life they see in their dreams. The Confident Black Girl was built to provide support, representation, and realistic action based solutions to women and help them overcome life’s challenges.

We help women navigate their careers, find their voice, become safe to have full autonomy over their bodies, be able to advocate for themselves and learn to choose them first. We deserve to experience the fullness of our own love, power, support and efforts first. The Confident Black Girl inspires you to make the changes that honor you and allow you to sip from your own cup of all good things.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It absolutely hasn’t been smooth. I came to Arizona with 5 outfits. I had experienced loss, was recovering from an abusive relationship, our water was off, we were being evicted it was very bad. I packed up my car that was on the verge of being repossessed with all I could fit of my two children who were 6 and 3 at the time, my brother and sister and we drove off with less than $200 in my pocket. I was terrified. All I knew is I wanted more for my life, my children and I could not continue to live the way I was, poor, destitute, depleted.

We had a blowout on the way to AZ. This was a time before cell phones were the thing. I had to stop at my best friends house in Lincoln MS because we didn’t have money to continue the trip. I waited as we asked around for money to get back on the road. She gave me her cell phone for the road because she was so worried about us traveling without it. I am so grateful.

When we had the blowout, we were about 30 minutes from Albuquerque NM. I learned the true meaning of community and saw the power in black men protecting their community. My best friend’s father sent us money for a tire, hotel and food so we could get back on the road. That was almost 16 years ago and I am still moved to tears because I am so grateful for this beautiful black man. Mr. Orlando Knight made a lasting impression on me that despite any negative stereotypes heard on the news and spread in the media, Black men do protect, provide and love their community.

When I arrived in AZ, I was blessed to receive my first role right away. I was making double what I made in IL. I went from $8 to $16 an hour. The challenge, I was constantly told I was abrasive, aggressive, harsh even though I was a top performer in my role. This was my first experience with micro aggressions and bias in corporate America. Being this was my first role in corporate I was at a loss.

The experiences started to wear at my confidence, my voice became softer, I was fearful of speaking up and out due to fear of being reprimanded and treated even harsher. I was in HR meetings more than any person should be within my tenure at that company. That is what motivated me to start The Confident Black Girl. As I looked for books, mentors, webinars and workshops, I did not see anyone that looked like me. The women that led the industry on confidence and coaching were from other backgrounds and experiences. I needed to hear and see someone that experienced the same type of prejudices I did and that could help me navigate the spaces I was in and help me be empowered, so I became what I needed.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Confident Black Girl ?
The Confident Black Girl is a women’s empowerment coaching super star. We help women build their confidence in self so they can advocate and ask for what they want out of life, love, relationships, their career. We tackle one challenge at a time as we rebuild our confidence in self.

Oftentimes, women that look like me who are fat, black and come from various socioeconomic backgrounds and are navigating life through traumas don’t have representation. We are often shut out of conversations in rooms where we could gain knowledge that would help us grow. We aren’t invited to the table. If we are invited, the chairs are too small, or we are expected to be meek and any movement, or words spoken are viewed loud, brash, “extra”.

It’s one thing to come from money or a solid family structure and guide someone to become confident but what does it look like when you come from despair, poverty? What does it look like to be bold, happy, sexy and free as a plus size black woman? What does it look like to overcome when you were a poor, single teenage mother? What is the path that doesn’t move directly from high school to bachelor’s degree to career? Where is the representation that tells poor, black, fat women they deserve respect NOW, and are worthy of more NOW.

They do not have to lose weight, make more money, move from their beloved neighborhoods to experience joy, love, respect, peace. What if they can have a great life, now? We believe our happiness starts now, where we are, how we are and it is our choice. We are not more worthy when we fit the molds society says we have to be in, in order to have this perfect life. Perfection doesn’t exist.

We are here to represent, support, and empower the underserved amongst us. We are known for connecting with our audience from a transparent, vulnerable place. We tell the story, the raw, truthful story. We have experience being looked over for promotions because of size, so we coach our women on how to navigate that. We are proud that we have realistic life experience to match what we preach. We want women to know that there is power in the pivot.

Never be afraid to start now and The Confident Black Girl is going to walk in the valley with you, hand in hand, and we are ready to pick you up and pull you out if you need us. We offer, one on one coaching, group coaching, image consulting to help women dress for their body shape and create a signature look so they are ready for dates, work events, interviews any occasion. We equip women with the tools and strategy plans to increase their salaries by double even triple.

The Confident Black Girl inspires change through empowerment, self love, honesty, and support.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I absolutely have loved Arizona. For me, it has been the land of milk and honey. Definitely full of opportunities and abilities to make connections. Collaboration is key and I love seeing so many small businesses and black businesses connecting to create amazing cultural experiences, from music to food. I see the growth.

What I do not like about the culture here is that we do not have more events that represent our wants and needs. I want to see more events, concerts, networking and business opportunities for people of different socioeconomic backgrounds. I want to see more resources for the underserved. More diverse cultural and social experiences. I want to see more art exhibits. I also want to see the wages and salaries match the cost of living. And for the love of God, someone fix I-10 goodness that traffic is crazy, any day, any time!
