Meet Gillean Barkyoumb of Millennial Nutrition

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gillean Barkyoumb.

Hi Gillean , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It’s been a journey! I first became interested in nutrition after seeing the movie “Super Size Me” when I was in 8th grade. I remember be shocked at how quickly and drastically his health declined in just 30 days of eating fast food. Ever since then, my goal has been to make healthy eating simple and convenient. Whether it was through sharing tips and tricks on local and national TV segments or providing services like group nutrition programs, I wanted to help take nutrition off the to-do list of millennial women.

Just this year, I launched a membership that I am OBSESSED with! The idea for the membership, called the What’s for Dinner Club, came from my personal struggle as a busy working mom who wanted to have warm, healthy dinners on the table for my family but I felt overwhelmed with the preparation and planning. For just $1 per day, you can get “no recipes” recipes texted right to your phone every week with a grocery list to make dinner easier. I also include options for plant-based (dairy-free), gluten-free, and kid-friendly ideas.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This made me laugh out loud! I definitely would not call it a smooth road–doubts, fears, overwhelm all come to mind. For years I was juggling a corporate job and my business (Millennial Nutrition). Having my two girls made me realize how important it is to prioritize duties and delegate out tasks as well. One struggle that comes to mind is that a month after I left my corporate job to jump into my business 100%, the pandemic hit.

I was just getting settled and then my entire family was home with me and I was trying to juggle work with a 9-month old and a 3 year old. I could have easily get discourages and given up, but I kept pushing through. I owe a lot of that perseverance to the support and encouragement of my husband, Eric. I really could not pursue my business fully without his partnership at home.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I had it dialed down to the minute. My morning schedule started at 5 am and it included a 30-min workout, getting my girls ready for school, making bottles for daycare, cooking breakfast, pumping, showering, and heading out the door for work—all by 7:45 am. By the time I got to the office, I felt like I earned the right to be done with my day and relax, but then work started!

If you are a millennial, on-the-go woman like me, you want it all–a passionate relationship with your partner, well-behaved kids, close friendships, a successful and fulfilling career, a rejuvenating spiritual life, a committed exercise routine, and a bulletproof nutrition plan that makes healthy eating simple and convenient. Some people will tell you that it’s impossible to have it all, but I can’t settle for that. I don’t see why we can’t excel in all areas of our lives. The key is to get efficient. And that’s where I come in.

I am going to take nutrition off your to-do list so you can focus on all those other important areas of your life.

When you trust yourself with food, you gain the confidence you need to reach your goals. You no longer have to struggle with the “all in” or “all out” diet mentality. Instead, your daily habits become grounded in wellness so making healthy choices becomes a reflex, not a struggle.

I will help you establish these new eating habits through my simple plan with convenient “no recipe” recipes, education on proper portion control, and daily accountability. You will learn how to eat intuitively with health first, and that is when lasting change happens.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I have learned how to respect other people’s opinions and thoughts, and being open to new ways of thinking. I have many friends who have very strong opinions about what’s going on in the world that differ greatly from me, but I still value their friendship and support. I think we are all craving community and connection, and having an open mind is essential to do that in this new environment.
