Life & Work with Ely Triani

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ely Triani.

Hi Ely, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m from Bandung – Indonesia. Few years back, I had working as secretary at a well-known company. I’ve been working there for 16 years before. First 8 years I worked in my hometown. Next 8 years, I was moved out of my hometown 3 – 4 hours away from my husband, my daughter and my family. I used to love my job. I used to work from 7 am until 8 or 9 pm. I used to go back to my hometown every weekend. Year after year, and I thought I feel tired. I feel bored with my daily routine, bored with the office. I feel tired of had a little time with my loved ones.

So I decided to get out of my comfort zone, even in the midst of this pandemic situation. Last may I decided to leave my job. I have rest for 3 months, and this last 2 months I run my culinary business. I used 3 months of my resting time to think and plan of what should I do first. So the easiest thing as a housewife, I learn to cook. Because I’ve never cook before, during the year of my marriage. I started to learn to cook by myself.

I used to think cooking was difficult, but here I am now, some people like my food. And cooking doesn’t seem as difficult as it looks. And of course, I love it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. 16 years at office work made my circle of friends small. Moreover, I worked out of my hometown. I rarely meet friends in my hometown, even some friends, I lost their contact. Finally, I started to marketing myself in social media. I began posting my foods and ran a little promos on Instagram. I asked for a lot of help from my family and friend -who were very few in number- to promote my culinary business.

Some people regret my decision to leave my old job. Some people didn’t want to help promote my culinary business. But that’s ok. This is life, I can’t and I shouldn’t please everyone right?

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I spend my whole day in the kitchen. Trying to cooking new menu -appetizer, main course, dessert and snack- and cooking to serve my customer. Now, I almost good at cooking, different from me 3 months ago. Now I know a lot of tips about cooking. I even learned tips for storing vegetables to make them last longer. I learned not only big thing about cooking but also small things. Of course, I can’t compare to a chef in a five star restaurant yet, but I’m proud of who I am now. I make my food a little different from the others. I created it so that my food wouldn’t be easy to find anywhere else. And so that my food is always remembered by my customer.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Quality of characteristic I feel most important to my success is I never stop learning and praying. I’ve failed several times to make food but I never give up. I keep repeating again and again and again so that everything is perfect. On the other side, I’m not ashamed to lower my ego to ask for help from my family and friends.
