Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Segall. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Laura is an award-winning photographer dedicated to creating unique, thoughtful, and artistic wedding photographs. She studied photography and earned a BFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. She had worked as a staff photojournalist for publications in Michigan, Maine, Maryland, and Iowa, before putting down roots in Arizona over a decade ago. Her freelance photography has been published in The New York Times, People Magazine, Phoenix Magazine, and Arizona Highways as well as countless national and international publications.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The most difficult part of this business for me is self-promotion. I am a naturally more introverted person so I have had to work on my networking skills over the years.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
When asked about my style of wedding photography the answer is pretty easy. I photograph weddings in a photojournalistic style while incorporating artistic and dramatic portraiture.
As a photojournalist, I take the approach when photographing weddings to let the day happen naturally. I am not going to fabricate cliched images. I am not going to have you ‘freeze-frame” yourself while cutting the cake. I am not going to have you look longingly out a window or interrupt while you cheers with your wedding party. What I am going to do is capture the spontaneous, emotional, and beautiful reality happening at that moment.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I always wanted to be a photographer growing up. My role in the family was as the documentarian, always with a camera in my hand on vacation and family events. My two sisters were my first models. My grandmother worked in a photography studio and I remember visiting her and loving being in that environment. My father, also a role model, always loved and still does, photography as a hobby. He set up my very first darkroom in our basement in my childhood home. I could spend hours in the dark developing photographs. The process of watching my images come to life in the darkroom always felt like magic.
