Exploring Life & Business with Rani Reichow of Sharpen Up! Dance Team Training

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rani Reichow.

Hi Rani, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My love for dance team began in high school when I made the varsity pom squad. There’s something unique and addictive about dancing on a team compared to studio dancing; the level of athleticism and competitiveness, the camaraderie of being on a team, and of course, the dancing. I went on to dance in college and then for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL.

I knew from the moment I made my high school team that dance team would be a part of my life for a long time. I have always had a natural ability to perfect routines and to know what’s impactful on the floor, so looking back, it’s no surprise that I began coaching right out of high school and instructing at summer dance camps during my college summers. My last coaching job was a six-year stint as the Director of the Pinnacle High School Spiritline, coaching both the cheer and dance teams, and the program quickly became known for winning, school spirit, and a culture of leadership and service.

I can easily say that my happiest dance moments came from coaching. Aside from witnessing the dancers improve their skills, watching them grow as human beings was definitely the greatest feeling in the world. It became clear to me that I needed to start a business where I could expand my scope of influence.

That’s how Sharpen Up! Dance Team Training came to be. After leaving coaching, I teamed up with two former powerhouse coaches to create this amazing company at which I can share with young dancers my passion, expertise, and experiences. Many of my life and coaching philosophies come from my experiences as both coach and athlete. When I hear the words I tell my dancers — “Enjoy the journey.” “Chins up, chests up, shoulders back!” “If you can be seen, you’re ON!” “Eyebrows Up!” — I know they’re all rooted in the training I received from my own coaches, and I hope they will resonate with the athletes I train as long as my coaches’ words have stayed with me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I faced several bumps in the road that all played a role in my life, and I hope that by sharing my experiences with young dancers they realize that challenges help define who we are.

Between my seasons with the Chiefs and the Cardinals, I danced for a semi-pro football team, and was cut from the Phoenix Suns, the Orlando Magic, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I was even dismissed from the Cardinals mid-way through my first season due to some health struggles I was dealing with. I skipped a year and then tried out again, and I got cut. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit I felt disappointed, but I was never discouraged because I understand the business. I came back the following year, made the team, and enjoyed two more amazing seasons dancing on the sidelines.

What kept me going through all the defeat? My persistence and perseverance to achieve my goal as a pro cheerleader is what I want dancers to find inspiring about me. My mindset is to knock on every door until one opens, and that it will always be the right one. I also focused on the journey, not the destination, and met some incredible people along the way. I can also honestly say “thank you” to all of the directors who cut me, because I would not be living THIS life if it weren’t for those decisions that ultimately led me to this very moment.

Lastly, and most importantly, I feel like God uses me to share my message with young dancers, to help them to understand the tryout process, to accept rejection, to remain coachable, to trust in His plan for us and to enjoy life’s incredible journey, no matter the destination.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I really appreciate the natural beauty of Arizona, simply being surrounded by majestic mountains, the peaceful desert landscape, and the breathtaking sunsets. I also love all of the pro sports teams, great shopping options, and the variety of restaurants this city has to offer. Lots of entertainment and outdoor activities!

Is it cliché to say that the summer heat is what I like least? Other than that, it would be nice to see more live music options in general.
