Meet Dr. Ben Zorensky, ND of Naturopathic Athlete in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Ben Zorensky, ND.

Dr. Zorensky, ND, is a licensed, board-certified Naturopathic Physician and NOLS certified Wilderness First Responder. He also has been a Certified Bikram Yoga Instructor since 2003. Raised in a holistic household, his focus on nutrition, exercise and a healthy lifestyle began at an early age. Visits to National Parks in Colorado, Utah, Alaska, Arizona, and Maine were regular family occurrences. Early engagement with natural surroundings fostered an accessible sense of good health and peace of mind. It was an easy transition for Dr. Ben to understand nature as a therapeutic, healing tool.

In high school, as an All-State player on a championship basketball team, Ben drew on nutrition and plyometric training techniques to improve his performance. His dedication to athletics and academics led him to Johns Hopkins University, where he played Varsity basketball until a shoulder injury took him out of the game. It was the confluence of a study-abroad program in Australia introducing him to aboriginal culture, his experience rehabilitating his shoulder injury, his love for the outdoors, and his holistic upbringing that channeled him into Naturopathic Medicine.

In 2000, Ben moved to Arizona to attend the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (SCNM). Two years later, he and his wife, Elaina, opened Bikram Yoga Tempe where for more than fourteen years they served over 40,000 clients, including hundreds of professional athletes. In 2007, Dr. Zorensky, ND graduated from SCNM and currently practices Naturopathic Medicine as Chief Medical Officer for Naturopathic Athlete at WellSpring Holistic Health in Tempe, AZ.

Dr. Ben Zorensky’s rich background in Naturopathic Medicine, nutrition, collegiate athletics, wilderness experience, and therapeutic yoga serves to provide a unique perspective on health and healing. It is a foundation that allows him to help his patients realize greater wellness through individualized treatment plans that enable their body, mind, and spirit to restore and maintain optimal health. Dr. Zorensky, ND is a member of the Arizona Naturopathic Medical Association and is honored to be Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine’s ‘Inspiring Alumnus of 2015’! He has also studied Anatomy Trains with Tom Meyers. In addition to his practice, Dr. Zorensky enjoys teaching anatomy, physiology, and nutrition at yoga trainings and businesses world-wide. He is proud to be on the training staff for 105F, The Foundry, and One Fire.

“The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.” -Thomas Edison

Dr. Zorensky, ND, also explores nature through a lens. He is an avid professional large format film photographer and his images can be viewed at www.bezphotography.com

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Dr. Ben Zorensky and his wife, Elaina, started Bikram Yoga Tempe in 2002 and it grew to be one of largest and most successful studios in the Southwest for the next fourteen years. In 2007, Dr. Ben graduated from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and one year later established a wellness center, WellSpring Holistic Health. These were busy times, with a bustling yoga studio, a Naturopathic practice and a growing family—all requiring endless time and attention. In 2016, Dr. Ben and Elaina decided to channel their expertise and vision into a new business enterprise combining the therapeutic aspect of yoga with natural medicine in a peaceful environment. Vital modalities they were developing helped them navigate through that stressful time, enabling them to tap into the resilience and grace needed to bridge into a different venture, Naturopathic Athlete.

Naturopathic Athlete – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Naturopathic Athlete combines the principals of naturopathic medicine with the therapeutic practice of yoga. As a naturopathic physician and certified yoga instructor with fifteen years of teaching experience, Dr. Ben Zorensky knows first-hand the combined power of natural medicine and barefoot asana practice. Naturopathic Athlete specializes in learning about the individual human being and optimizing movement and nutrition as an everyday foundation for improving the body’s capacity to heal and maintain optimal health. We are most proud of our ability to relate to any person and help anybody on the path to better health and well-being. The popularity of yoga has grown significantly in the last twenty years and the demand for alternative medicine is on the rise. Naturopathic Athlete combines these two practices into one healing experience at WellSpring Holistic Health.

Drawing on a broad range of holistic modalities, Naturopathic Athlete offers custom-designed services for each patient. As a naturopathic medical practice, we specialize in empowering the dynamic healing force within to establish optimal health through natural medicine, biomechanics, nutrition, and lifestyle changes. Profound improvements in well-being manifest through simple modifications of diet, movement, lifestyle, and/or a prescription of natural supplements and botanicals. We use a thorough and holistic approach to medicine that treats the whole person and not just the symptoms.

An individualized program with Naturopathic Athlete focuses on restoring optimal health and preventing future illness or injury. Rooted in the idea that the body has the capacity to heal itself, our efforts will be to enable the body’s own resources to regenerate and thrive.

Some of our tools include: Nutrition, Stress Management Methods, Biomechanics of Movement, Botanical Medicine, Vitamin/Mineral Supplements, Posture and Gait Adjustments, Classical Homeopathy, Adrenal Stress Profiling, Sport’s Medicine, Performance Conditioning, Rest and Recovery Knowledge, and Empowering Educational Resources.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
At Naturopathic Athlete our focus is on providing value more than attaining success. As a physician, the most important part of my service is to help my patient achieve better health. Part of the value in my service is the time I spend with my patients. I want to know the patient as a whole person and provide treatment options and education specific to his or her needs. In each visit with my patients, we not only pursue effective remedies for their main complaints, we speak about the idea of ‘food as medicine’ and explore the importance how simple lifestyle changes can help mitigate stress, improve sleep and allow for more healthy movement throughout the day.
