Today we’d like to introduce you to Tina Newton.
Tina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Baking and even cooking have always been a passion of mine. Growing up, I would ask my neighbors if I could come to their homes to cook for them, my offer was never refused. I even spent time working in a French restaurant that gave me a bigger view of the baking world and I loved it. I did open a shop in downtown Tucson for a short time, that was more focused on gift baskets and diaper cakes but, at the end of the day, my interests would make its way back to food and baking. My first market ever was at the Little Anthony’s on Broadway and I only wish that market was still in operation. I loved bringing out new items every week, experimenting with different flavors and ideas. My banana bread alone took me six years to develop, I needed the flavor to be perfect, I have gotten better about not taking years to create and perfect an item because at the end of the day my only goal is for the consumer to taste the love I put into my goods.
At the beginning of 2019, I decided it was time to go back to markets and bake for the public, not just my four kids. I found the most amazing market, Picture Rocks Farmers Market, there I found a family and the confidence to venture out and join other markets and shows. I have received so much love from the community but, what makes my heart truly sing is that I can bring my babies with me and the patience I receive from everyone when my kids want to help sell Coffee and Goods with me.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have been some bumps in the road that have slowed down my timeline of eventually obtaining a food trailer that I can pack full of my treats and coffee. Some of it is not enough hours in the day and some of it is that my children and their activities and needs always come first.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I feel Baked has many unique goods that you cannot go to the store and just pick up, I carry a honey cookie that is sweetened with Life’s Sweet Honey Farms local honey and it could not be more perfect. We also carry a line of Almond Breads that come with different added flavors such as Coconut, Cherries and Apple Butter which by the way takes twenty-four hours from start to finish to make, the flavor is phenomenal. The number one thing I can say Baked is known for and has the most requests for is the Half Pound Chocolate Chip Cookies, made with dark chocolate shavings and semi-sweet chocolate chips.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The thing that I enjoy most about Tucson is that it is there is not a shortage of kind people in the market world, I always feel my kids are safe and that’s what is most important to me. I will sometimes I could definitely use less heat during the summer, that could be the toughest part of Tucson.
