Meet Sandra Bosscher of Contagious Design + Photo in East Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Bosscher.

Sandra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I love to share life and to be surrounded by people’s stories. My passion for the arts began when I was young, trying to find a new way to express my ideas and spark my soul. It was always an outlet for me, an escape into my imagination. I craved the process of creating. I have always been inspired by nature, noticing light, and trying to capture the feeling of that moment. I went to university and graduated with a Bachelor of Design in Toronto, Canada. I took classes in Photography and discovered a whole new realm of creative expression. I opened my business, Contagious Design + Photo, in 2008, doing freelance graphic design and photography work. Between becoming a mom and growing a business, it has been busy but so good for my soul.

I crave the need to be creative. I love the process of sketching a design, mixing colors on my palette and prompting moments in photography. Capturing photographs in raw moments of connection move me. Painting a scene that is fluid and vibrant fills me. Creating a design that evokes personality and resonates with someone is powerful. I have a wide spectrum of services I offer, but the heart of all my work is being the storyteller for my clients.

Being a business owner is always a journey in itself. Over the eleven years, I have been running this business. I have learned to break the mold, to truly live out the uniqueness of me and the skills I have to create for others. I want to explore all the areas that inspire me to align myself with others who appreciate and connect with my work. I strive to discover new processes in all areas of my business and continue to diversify.

Today, my family is my drive. They push me to be who I was created to be. My husband encourages me to share my voice through time in my studio or out on photo session. My three children are my cheerleaders, thinking everything I create is a masterpiece. Here in Arizona, I am launching myself into a landscape of amazing artists, and I am rising to the challenge to share my voice.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Most things need diversity and change. Obstacles can be more of an opportunity to grow than a hardship. That is where growth happens, and you can truly find where your passion lies.

The biggest struggle for my business has been to continue growing even though we’ve relocated a couple of times to different cities. I build a lot of my clientele by word of mouth, and leaving that network is always hard. It takes a couple of years to establish a good footing and generate referrals. With each move comes a time of networking and building up more clientele. It also allows a time to refresh and hone in on what I truly want this business to be.

The other challenge is maintaining a work life and home life balance. Working from home with young children and relaunching a creative business makes meeting the needs of both challenging at times. What keeps me pursuing it is the fact that I love it so much. All the amazing clients I meet along the way is worth it and reminds me why I am in the creative industry.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Contagious Design + Photo – what should we know?
I am an artist. At the heart of it, I create things. I use digital media, photography, and a paintbrush to pursue all things creative. I am a mother, wife, believer, and a lover of authenticity.

I have a rich background in the fine arts that turned me towards a love of graphic design and photography. My business is comprised of graphic design, photography, and commission artwork. Most of my design work is based on branding design, marketing materials, and web design. I am also a photographer who is constantly seeking adventure and creating raw moments with my clients. I will hike with my gear to your favorite location and wait for that golden light to overtake the scene. It is more about creating a relaxing environment and letting my clients settle in and be themselves.

My business has recently been growing in the creative arts, with commission artwork and wall murals. It has been exciting to venture more into this world of art for the public. Mural work has also been a new way to engage others into my process. This is the part where art transforms through process and time and allows my audience to see it all. I enjoy getting lost in my own world of painting.

How do you define success?
Success is doing what you love. Big or small, it’s being passionate about your work and reaching your goals. Still, success is hard work, deliberate planning, and intentional content. It’s a constant pursuit of growth and challenging yourself. As an artist, I don’t want to get stuck in the mundane, and I strive for original authentic ideas. This means trying my hand at new things and messing up and trying again. As my business becomes more successful, I hope to be aligned with clients who wholeheartedly find joy in the process of working together and building a friendship along the way. Art is personal, and sharing in that experience is rewarding and vulnerable. I love that art, in its various forms, are all meant to move you. Art taps into those moments that do not have words and brings out a rawness that only art can hold. When that is accomplished, my work is done. This marks success to me as a creative.
