Meet Kim Prince of Proven Media in Carefree

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Prince.

Kim, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I own a marketing communications firm that specializes in the legal cannabis industry. We work with clients in Arizona and around the globe. I have a degree in journalism from Northern Arizona University and have worked in the communications field for most of my career. We pivoted to the cannabis industry nearly six years ago and haven’t looked back. They say to follow your passion, and I did so. My work brings two of my passions together, cannabis and business. We try to bring a professional presence to all that we do. We are a “family friendly” business, so to speak. My father is an immigrant from Greece and he taught me to work hard for all that I want to achieve. The journey has not been an easy one, but it is one that I am grateful to have taken.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Owning your own business is hard, and owning one in the cannabis segment can be doubly hard. There are credible people in the industry, and there are some not so credible people in the industry. In my heart, I want to believe what clients tell me, but in my head, I always proceed with caution.

Public Relations, as expertise, is hard to define. I have found in the emerging cannabis industry, many people say they understand PR, but can’t define the difference between a paid ad and an earned media piece. I asked one job applicant if she could help me get our clients on TV. She admitted she had no idea how to do so, yet she insisted she was a PR pro. There are a lot of posers in the cannabis industry. Our biggest challenge is to weed them out and work with credible companies who understand the function of the different segments of marketing and how they work to gather.

We have had other obstacles, such as having our payment processing canceled because of our work in the industry. But, by far the biggest challenge is the people in the industry who are somewhat like gunslingers, but only a few can shoot straight.

Tell us more about the business.
We were named one of the Top 5 Most Powerful Cannabis PR Firms, by the Observer. We have been also called cannabis “star makers.” It is a huge honor for us. We help companies, brands, people and events in the legal marijuana industry to elevate their awareness. We have worked across the country and across the globe.

The people we have worked with range from former heads of state to former NFL players who were willing to come out and speak on the record about cannabis. We have worked with tech companies and outstanding brands. We have worked with private firms and publicly traded companies.

Our expertise and our educated team set us apart. We have paid our dues and earned the distinctions bestowed upon our team. We have dedicated ourselves to understanding state-by-state compliance, the products and the players in the industry. We have done our homework. We started at the bottom and have worked our way up.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck comes to those who are prepared. We have worked hard to achieve success.
