Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy McArthur.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Florida State University in Civil Engineering with a specialty in Environmental Engineering. I worked my way through college having as many as three jobs at a time from landscaper to restaurant server to FSU land survey class instructor to civil engineering intern. After graduation, I worked for a civil engineering company in the land development department. It was there that I learned that I enjoyed the aspects of land development but not so much the engineering part of it. After a lot of research, I discovered that home builders could use someone with my background in their land department. I looked in the yellow pages (back then that was the only way) for all of the homebuilders in the Phoenix Metro area, and I contacted every one of them. I had several interested ones, but Centex Homes was the best fit. That is where I worked for Jim Ratkovic, who really became my mentor. He gave me many opportunities to learn all aspects of land acquisition, land development and project management/entitlement. After working at Centex Homes and Richmond American Homes as the land acquisition manager, I was recruited to work for a land brokerage company called Commerce Realty Advisors. I learned a lot from the owners of the company and they gave me many opportunities. After five years with them, I decided to start my own land brokerage company in January 2010.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The transition to owning my own company has been great, and I have learned a lot. The biggest obstacles were at the beginning, when I was making decisions that would be the building blocks of the company. I am not creative, so working to create a company name, company logo, website, business cards, and marketing information did not come that easy to me. There were also decisions on strategy of the business, including what software to implement, how to create a landowner database, and how to create the mapping program. As you go along as an entrepreneur and business owner, you are constantly making decisions from small to large that can have a large impact on the company and it’s future. It isn’t for everyone, but I love it!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about McArthur Land Company – what should we know?
Founded in January 2010, the McArthur Land Company was developed with the intention to provide complete commercial Real Estate Brokerage services to home builders, land developers, land investors, farmers, and lending institutions.
McArthur Land Company specializes in the sale of land, improved subdivisions, and partially improved subdivisions. The intended use of the land is to develop master planned communities, residential subdivisions, commercial and retail sites and industrial subdivisions.
We offer a unique experience by providing a hands-on approach, frequent client interaction, and unprecedented knowledge of land development, civil engineering, environmental engineering and home building. Our unrivaled competencies provide significant value to our clients. Unlike some of our competitors, our sales associates work together as a team to provide a unified strategy to our clients.
We utilize ArcGIS software to provide an unparalleled mapping system for the entire Metro Phoenix area and all outlying suburbs. We maintain a database of all property owners, home builders and developers/investors.
Jeremy McArthur built McArthur Land Company on the foundation of providing the most comprehensive services with a strong commitment to integrity, accountability and customer service you can rely on.
Jeremy McArthur has entitled and built thousands of lots as a civil engineer, home builder and land broker. His experience has allowed him to help manage these services and provide insight for landowners. In order to receive the highest price for the property, it must be entitled to have the correct lot sizes and configurations for that submarket and a specific property. Wrong lot sizes or configurations can lead to lower land prices and higher development costs. We make sure that won’t happen!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have been fortunate enough to have many mentors, supporters and advocates. Jim Ratkovic was the first mentor at Centex Homes. He really helped me grow in the business in a short time, teaching me about the industry and being a great advocate within the company and with clients. I, also, learned a lot from the owners at the brokerage company I worked for after the homebuilders. The two owners were great leaders and teachers in that industry. They gave me a lot of opportunities and were advocates for our clients and customers. Those stand out the most, but I have experiences with many people every day that help inspire me, motivate me and provide positive influences.
