Today we’d like to introduce you to Etana Holowinko.
Etana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Before you delve into the world of SocietyJazz let me begin by explaining to you what SocietyJazz is.
Society means the totality of social relationships among humans. Jazz representing not a style of music, but the slang use of the word jazz, meaning enthusiasm and unspecified things. So SocietyJazz is people, their environments and their passions. Everything that makes us human compiled into one and these are our core principles. The base idea being true human communication, connection and understanding. Utilizing technology as a tool not a replacement for the face to face in our physical environment. Allowing for true/better understanding of one another: who we are in relation to what we do and how we do it.
SocietyJazz is the brainchild of myself, Etana Holowinko. Its beginnings are of a humble nature starting off with a six year old girl and her dream. Now it my personal motto to “spend my time not dreaming but creating.” SocietyJazz is the way I have chosen to represent myself and my work for a few reasons. 1. I am a part of society, just like you. At heart, I am humanist, although I may not always agree with everyone. I always listen. Gaining new knowledge and incorporating it into who I am and what I do. 2. The word jazz creates that collaboration for me, I take this skill and incorporate it; instilling a very diverse range of design disciplines. All focused on YOU, the client and finding your voice.
SocietyJazz offers a unique method in developing your business aligned with yourself. We believe that each person is uniquely different; therefore their love and passion in life and how they bring it the world is their own. That unique message can be delivered to your clients and we would like to help you do just that.
Has it been a smooth road?
Since this is a lifelong undertaking of creating and living my passion in the form of my “job/work” it is and always will be under development as society grows and changes, myself and my business must adapt and this has been woven directly into my brand SocietyJazz thru the use of our Living Portfolio Process. That said the road to adaptation is not always direct, clear and/or easy to follow. It start as six year old girl on the school bus identifying that I wanted to own a business but not only that. I wanted to live above my business so that I could come down stairs in the morning and just get straight to work. This was my first indication that my work and my passion were one in the same.
Then I started on road of education; In traditional grade school I discovered art class and my creativity and I loved it, I found joy in it and could lose myself for hours within it, It was already clear that I wasn’t a traditional learner. So when it came time for High School I was able to find one that focused on the arts and continue to develop my creative skills. This is where I was first introduced to Photoshop, Creative Writing, Marketing and the career field of graphic design. I was hooked because sadly I had to let go of the dream of being a famous oil painter, as I was no good at the medium. That rocket into my being chosen for the Who’s Who of American High School Students where I crafted a short bio including my love of graphic design, What I was unaware of is that colleges get a hold of those books each year and send students within them applications to apply for those areas they indicated they were passionate about. I got dozens of letters, I read them all and only applied to one, I was accepted and offered and opportunity to complete a scholarship, which was to design a CD cover. I completed the scholarship project, submitted it and low and behold won the scholarship. That was it I was certain that is career was my destiny.
I pursued it and completed my AA and BA in Visual Communications followed up by an Master’s Degree in Technology where I developed my Living Portfolio Process which I have been honing and refining ever since. First by enter the job market and putting myself and my skills to the test for the corporate world while building my brand at night, there wasn’t a lot of sleep involved. Then 3 years when my core beliefs no longer aligned with the business I was working for I took the leap and went fully solo. I’ve kept some of my long term clients, other shut down or went on a different path and that’s when my diversity and adaptation kicked in I started teaching graphic and web design as well as consulting to round out my services.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with SocietyJazz Graphic & Web Design – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Welcome, my name is Etana Holowinko, M.S. and I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. I am a detail oriented, self-starting designer with of 11 years of professional experience under my belt. From print to web, design is not simply what I do for a living it is my passion. My Tempe, Arizona based business SocietyJazz = Society as in the totality of people and Jazz as in all that stuff. Bring together the culmination of my core concepts: people, passions, environments. It is the philosophy not only behind my business but my life, I believe that each person is uniquely different so therefore their love/passion in life and how they bring it the world is their own. That message can be delivered in each and every promotional material created from logo to website and beyond. By helping people to express themselves and their passions into their brands rather than create a brand as an individual. Using the core concepts of SocietyJazz in conjunction with the Living Portfolio Process allows me and the collaborators at SocietyJazz to do just that. We take on your graphics from the perspective of making your graphic story one that your market audience not only directly understands and wants to read but be a part of.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
When I moved to Tempe 1999 after high school graduation it was right after a miserable winter in Dayton, Ohio where we were trapped inside our house for the better part of a month because the road ways where too dangerous for buses and non-essential travel. The snow didn’t completely melt until July and that was it I was done with winter forever. So moving to the valley of the sun has been perfect, I admit the heat takes some getting used to but I prefer to icky gray winters any day. I love the constant change and growth that the city under goes and feel that the city has a way of weeding out the weak, you either love it or hate it here there’s no between.
