Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Doe.
Hi Amber, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a reluctant artist. I had a single mother growing up and the focus was on a career or job path that led to financial independence and security, but events happened in my life that shaped my need to become an artist. For me, being an artist is a responsibility, and using your preferred medium|mediums to tell stories of our experiences in this world is the job.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road. It is an ongoing journey like most things in life it is a lifelong process where you have to make peace with the process and its relationship to your journey. My biggest struggle is wanting to reach new and larger audiences, I make work to be shared. It is also very isolating work, your life doesn’t look like most of your friends and family.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am traditionally a sculptor and weaver by training, but I am actually interdisciplinary because I will use any and all tools at my disposal to tell the story I am called to tell.
I would say I am probably known for my large-scale textile sculptures. I highlight stories of traditionally mistreated populations to create a clearer sense of how we are all connected.
Honestly, I am most proud that I haven’t given up. Art-making is not glamorous or financially rewarding.
My work feels unique because my hand is every part of the process, and I don’t take any shortcuts and my subject matter is usually trauma-inducing.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I learned a lot from covid. I think, like many people, I took interaction and community for granted. Covid taught me to reprioritize my goals in this life and to cherish time with family and friends. Post covid I had to be honest with myself about sadness and depression that started during that time and didn’t lift when quarantine ended.
