Art & Life with Brittanie Cordova

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittanie Cordova.

Brittanie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
When I graduated high school, I began taking basic cake decorating classes at a local craft store with my mother and my grandmother. I immediately fell in love! I bought and read through tons of baking and cake decorating books, scoured the web and of course, Youtube. However, in the interest of playing it safe and following another passion of mine, I spent the following few years in college getting my nursing degree. Nursing has given me the opportunity to play such a special and fulfilling role in my patients and their families lives that cannot be paralleled by any other profession. I am forever grateful to be a Nurse! While working as a Nurse, I was still operating a very small side cake business taking a few orders here and there. About two years ago, I decided there was no better time to stop playing it safe and make my dream a reality. We created Abbie Cakes, named after my daughter, Abbie. We formalized the business, branded Abbie Cakes, and really started thinking about who we are, our vision and how to execute the vision. In 2018, our business grew exponentially! We are now a team of 5; myself, Rosie, Airiqa, Zach and of course, Abbie! With this team, we have been able to determine who Abbie Cakes is and we work hard to stay true to that. We have made a name for ourselves in the cake community and have established partnerships throughout the valley.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
We are a custom cake and dessert shop, baking from scratch with local ingredients for quality and taste that will knock your socks off! Our custom cakes are just that- custom. We take details from your event or wedding (invitation, color scheme, decor, etc.) and use those to inspire a unique design just for you. This is, hands down, my favorite part of the process- being creative and using a variety of cake decorating techniques and skills to create something that executes our client’s vision. When our clients entrust us to make their dream cake, we are humbled and excited to make that dream a reality. There will be no shortage of attention to detail. The beauty is in the details, and we make sure they are on point, if I may.

In addition to cakes, we also create decadent baked goods such as cakesicles, cupcakes, and breads. An Abbie Cakes original item is our “Cake in a Jar.” Essentially, it’s two layers of cake + filling and icing layered in a mason jar ready to enjoy. Our jars aways come with a twine bow + a spork that way you can open the jar and dive right in. One of the neatest things we do with these is creating custom tags to tie on the jars. We using custom messages, monograms, etc. to make the tag specific to your event. Many clients are opting out of a large cake and ordering cake jars in its place, doubling as a favor for guests.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
Certainly. I found that one of the biggest struggles was creating cakes that I didn’t feel were true to Abbie Cakes. We really do believe that cake decorating is an art, and every artist is different. Our style is clean, fresh, modern, and beautiful honestly! We want to stay true that and it can difficult when you’re trying to run a business, and you have an overload of requests for cakes, even if they really aren’t your jam. We finally said that we would only say yes to things that are our style, and allow us to use our skills, expertise, and creativity. There are so many cake artists out there, and I believe that we all have our niche.
