Conversations with Ang Sirena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ang Sirena.

Ang Sirena

Hi Ang, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Ang Sirena. I am a Soul R&B artist who draws a lot of influence from Erykah Badu and Amy Winehouse but also many influences of all genres from singer-songwriter to pop and rock to oldies growing up. I am originally from Glendale, CA but moved back here to Gilbert, AZ March 2023 when I started Ang Sirena. I began writing music around 2008 when I had just moved to Chandler, AZ for high school because I had no friends yet (and because it was so hot) so it was easy to become a recluse and turn to music. 16 years later here I am still writing and taking it more seriously except now I produce my own beats. I’ve been releasing music since I was 16 years old which were usually collabs, but my debut EP,  Alone But Not Lonely, releasing March 1 feels truly like a new official chapter for my solo music journey.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It has definitely been a rocky road, but that is how I have learned so much. Music had been a huge part of my upbringing, but my parents weren’t too pleased when I wanted to pursue music instead of college. Sure enough I dropped out of college after one year and moved away to figure myself out without their influence. After working odd jobs and being lost for so long I knew where my heart always was. Years later I reconnected with my friends who were pursuing music full time. Coming from such a low point in my life they were just the inspiration I needed to pursue music again, and more seriously this time. Since then it has been a long journey full of learning experiences and odd jobs still but I’m doing what I love finally and with my family’s support. My biggest focus right now is finding a balance of personal life and pursuing music. Another obstacle is finding a balance of collaborations and my own music too. When I focused more on collaborations from the jump of my career it was a little hard to find my own sound and stand by it. Whether out of people pleasing or the lack of confidence in my own music, I had to learn how to be confident in myself by giving myself the time to find my sound.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to be more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I make modern soul and alternative RnB music but often bend genres with my affinity for indie music. I write songs and create most beats by ear. Although technical and music theory is essential, there is something about songs that come from pure feeling, too. However, I am mostly proud of my distinct voice and songwriting. My voice stands out not only because of the sound but because when I sing, I truly feel I am in a state of healing. I have been through a bit personally (as we all have), and every day, I am healing, especially with and through music. My lyrics are my mantras from hard times or just moments of vulnerability.
