Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Griffin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Brenda. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a small town girl who moved across the country to the “big city” when I was 25 with no job, only one friend and enjoyed the ride. I’m a cowgirl at heart and love that Tucson is a western town with lots of opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy the beauty. I’ve probably experienced more of what this great state has to offer than those who were born here because it was new to me and I took every opportunity to get out and experience the unknown.
Professionally, I spent 20 years working with lawyers and needed something more fulfilling. At the age of 40, I jumped ship so to speak and started attending aesthetic school at night while working full time. After graduation, I continued to work full time at the law firm while working on the weekends in the skin care industry. Suddenly, I realized this was not getting me to my dream, working more hours but not in skin care.
I literally quit my full-time job with no savings and opened my own business, working at it with all my heart to very slowly grow it. My background in law helped me with many facets of starting a business, getting proper licensing, marketing, etc. It was not easy but finding my niche in helping those who suffer from acne really turned things for the better and was so much more rewarding.
Today I can say I own and operate a successful acne clinic, changing the lives of others for the better and receiving great satisfaction by helping others. If you have a dream, keep working at it. Owning your own business is no easier than going to a weekly 9-5 job, but it is very rewarding.
When not helping others with their skin, I enjoy reading, hiking, boating, horseback riding, my church and exploring new restaurants and wine. I have been a volunteer for the Fiesta de Los Vaqueros for 20 years as well as Arizona Cattle Dog Rescue.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Embracing the struggles of any business can benefit each one of us greatly by growing us in many ways. It stretches us beyond what we think our limits are and enhances our lives.
As a sole proprietor finding time to do the administrative duties can be taxing, especially when I love serving clients and changing their lives, which is what I would rather be doing. There is nothing more rewarding.
Finding a graceful way to set boundaries is an asset when you work alone. Learning how to say no to unexpected requests from clients for your time during off hours is part of the puzzle. Because I love what I do and want to help, I sometimes says yes to requests that are outside the scope of business hours.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Tucson Acne Clinic – what should we know?
I mainly specialize and work with those who suffer from acne. This condition can be emotionally disturbing to those who suffer. It can cause them to not pursue their dreams, not date, stay home, suffer from depression and even to the extreme of taking their own life. It is truly heartbreaking.
One of the things I’m most proud of is taking the time and perseverance to self-brand some of the products I use to help my clients clear their acne. This is a complicated and time consuming endeavor with many components such as finding containers, designing labeling and researching product ingredients. I go above and beyond with my time in helping my clients.
I sometimes take it too personally because I want all my clients to succeed and live out their dreams, take back their lives and have self-confidence. The client plays a huge role in this process and sometimes they are not fully on board which does not result in success and I have had to learn to not take it personally.
What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
Tucson is a wonderful city with lots of western heritage, beautiful mountains, lots of wildflowers in the spring, beautiful golf courses, as well as many facets of the Hispanic culture such as art and food. We are home to one of the top professional rodeos as well as the longest non-motorized parades in America.
It is a beautiful city to raise your family in and enjoy outdoor activities. The food options are unlimited due to the independent restaurant owners who share their creativity and talents with it’s citizens. There are many options if you enjoy the performing arts and experiencing independent artist’s work from metal to sculpting to painting.
