Conversations with Barbie Oraha

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbie Oraha.

Hi Barbie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was always the friend doing everyone’s makeup for dances, special events, and photos. I loved beauty, but I never really considered it a career path. Instead, I pursued higher education, earning both my Bachelor’s degree in Business and my MBA in IT Management. Throughout my career, I worked in customer service, leadership, human resources, compliance, and various management roles.

While I was grateful for those opportunities, I often found myself wondering what I wanted to be when I grew up. I always felt capable of doing more than my position allowed and knew there was something bigger I was meant to build. Looking back now, I truly believe God was preparing me all along. Every role taught me valuable skills in communication, leadership, operations, problem solving, team development, and business management, all of which would later become essential in entrepreneurship.

In 2017, I started freelancing as a makeup artist on weekends while continuing my corporate career. What began as a passion project quickly grew through referrals and word of mouth. I have always had a passion for leadership, and as demand increased, I realized there was an opportunity to create something much larger than myself.

In 2023, I officially launched Boss Beauty, and what started as a solo venture has grown into a luxury bridal hair and makeup team of more than 25 talented artists serving brides throughout Arizona. Today, I have the privilege of leading an incredible team, helping women feel beautiful and confident on some of the most important days of their lives, and building a business that combines my passion for beauty with my love for leadership and entrepreneurship.

The journey has not always been easy, but it has been incredibly rewarding. Looking back, all of those years spent in corporate America were not a detour. They were part of God’s plan to equip me with the knowledge, experience, and confidence needed to build the business I have today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Entrepreneurship can be incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with a level of responsibility and sacrifice that many people do not see.

One of the biggest misconceptions about owning a business is that you have more freedom and time off. In reality, there are no true days off. Especially in the wedding industry, where you are responsible for one of the most important days in a person’s life, the responsibility never really stops. Weddings primarily take place on weekends, which means I have missed countless family gatherings, birthdays, holidays, and time with friends over the years. While others are enjoying their weekends, those are often our busiest workdays.

Even when I am on vacation, I am never completely checked out. There are still emails to answer, clients to support, team members who need guidance, timelines to review, and problems that need solving. When you own the business, there is always something that requires your attention.

One of the most difficult seasons of my life came during wedding season last year, shortly after giving birth to my daughter. I was unexpectedly hospitalized with a life threatening illness and spent time fighting for my health while simultaneously trying to ensure the business continued running smoothly. It was an incredibly challenging experience because weddings do not stop simply because life happens. Clients have invested in your services for one of the most important days of their lives, and they are counting on you to deliver. In those moments, I was incredibly grateful for the talented artists on my team, as well as the support of my family and friends, who helped carry the weight when I physically could not.

Another challenge that people often do not realize is that being a business owner today involves so much more than simply providing a service. Running the business is only one piece of the puzzle. You also have to be present on social media, create content, market your brand, respond to inquiries, manage finances, recruit and train team members, maintain systems and processes, handle customer service, and continuously adapt to an ever changing industry. There are days when I spend more time working on the business than actually performing the services we provide.

That said, every challenge has taught me something valuable. The sacrifices, setbacks, and difficult seasons have helped me grow as a leader, strengthened my faith, and reminded me how important community is. While the road has not been easy, I am incredibly grateful for the journey and for the opportunity to build something that impacts both our clients and the artists on our team.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the founder and owner of Boss Beauty, a luxury bridal hair and makeup company serving brides throughout Arizona. We specialize in on location bridal beauty services and are known for our signature editorial-style soft glam aesthetic. Our approach focuses on creating polished, elevated looks that enhance each client’s natural beauty while ensuring they look timeless, refined, and flawless both in person and in photographs.

What started as a solo freelance makeup business has grown into a team of more than 25 talented artists who collectively serve hundreds of weddings each year. While beautiful hair and makeup are certainly at the core of what we do, I believe what truly sets us apart is the experience we provide. Weddings can be stressful, and our goal is to make the beauty portion of the day feel seamless, organized, and enjoyable. We focus heavily on professionalism, communication, reliability, and creating a luxury experience from the initial inquiry all the way through the wedding day.

I am most proud of the team and company culture we have built. When people see Boss Beauty, they often see the beautiful photos and finished looks, but behind the scenes is an incredible group of artists who genuinely care about our clients and each other. Building a team of talented professionals who share the same standards and values has been one of my greatest accomplishments.

I also believe my background outside of the beauty industry has helped set me apart. My education in business and IT management, combined with my experience in leadership, human resources, compliance, customer service, and operations, gave me a unique perspective on how to build and scale a business. While artistry is essential, creating a successful company also requires systems, processes, communication, and strong leadership. I have been fortunate to combine my passion for beauty with the business skills I developed throughout my corporate career.

Above all, I am proud that Boss Beauty has become more than just a hair and makeup company. It has created opportunities for artists to grow their careers, allowed us to serve hundreds of incredible clients, and given me the opportunity to build something meaningful that positively impacts others. Seeing our team grow and watching our clients feel confident and beautiful on some of the most important days of their lives is what makes all of the hard work worth it.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think the beauty and wedding industries will continue evolving significantly over the next 5 to 10 years. One of the biggest shifts I see is clients becoming increasingly educated and intentional about the services they invest in. Social media has given brides access to artists from all over the world, which has raised expectations regarding quality, professionalism, and the overall client experience.

From an artistry perspective, I believe we will continue seeing a move away from heavy, overly filtered beauty trends and toward more refined, timeless looks. Brides are increasingly gravitating toward elevated soft glam that enhances their natural features rather than completely transforming them. They want to look like the best version of themselves, not like someone else.

I also think technology and artificial intelligence will play a larger role in marketing, business operations, and client communication. While AI can be a powerful tool, I believe personal connection will become even more valuable. Weddings are deeply personal, emotional experiences, and clients will continue seeking professionals who can provide a human touch, genuine expertise, and exceptional service.

Within the beauty industry, I expect to see continued growth in skin-focused beauty. Clients are investing more in skincare, wellness, and preventative treatments than ever before. Healthy skin has become just as important as the makeup applied on top of it, and I am hoping that trend will continue to grow.

From a business perspective, I believe there will be a greater separation between hobbyists and true professionals. As competition increases, successful businesses will need more than artistic talent. They will need strong systems, branding, customer service, team development, and operational excellence. Clients are looking for reliability and a seamless experience, not just beautiful work.

Overall, I believe the future belongs to businesses that can combine exceptional artistry with outstanding client experiences. The companies that continue to innovate while maintaining a personal connection with their clients will be the ones that thrive.
