Can you talk to us about your view on risk taking. Have you taken any major risks (and if so, can you tell us about those risks)? Regardless of whether you view yourself as a risk-taker or not, we’d love to hear your perspective on how you think about risk.
As a financial advisor, the concept of “risk” is a daily topic, and I guide clients in planning according to their risk tolerance. Each episode of market volatility brings a fresh wave of fear, anxiety, and doubt, even for seasoned investors who have weathered multiple downturns. The recurring question is: Will this be the downturn we can’t recover from? This emotional reaction is entirely normal—it’s part of being human. Volatility isn’t new; it’s inherent to the investment journey. Each downturn is driven by unique circumstances: a global pandemic in 2020, a financial crisis in 2008, terrorism and the dot-com bust in 2001. Future challenges might include inflation, geopolitical tensions, or AI-driven market shifts. Our brains perceive each event as new and potentially more threatening, which can lead to an overwhelming urge to act—protecting assets, moving to cash, or switching to seemingly safer investments. Yet, emotional decisions during turbulent times can be detrimental. Missing even a few of the market’s best days, typically occurring during high volatility, can significantly affect long-term returns. It’s crucial to focus on your long-term plan—your goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance. While we can’t control market volatility, we can control our response- consider rebalancing your portfolio periodically to stay aligned with your strategy, and remain invested, resisting the urge to time the market. Quick decisions made in emotional states can lead to costly errors. Financial decisions are often emotionally charged, and navigating market fluctuations or unexpected life events can be overwhelming. A financial advisor serves as your objective voice of reason, offering unbiased guidance and holding you accountable to your long-term objectives. They help you separate emotions from logic, ensuring you make informed decisions based on a thorough understanding of your financial situation and risk tolerance.
