I started my career in interior design more than 25 years ago. The initial foray into design came while preparing a nursery for my first child, which not only served as a personal project but also as a catalyst for professional growth. During this process, a connection was made with a professional interior designer, leading to a pivotal moment when the designer recognized my creative talents. This friendship resulted in an invitation to work alongside the established designer, providing invaluable experience and mentorship. This opportunity was crucial for aspiring designer like myself who was uncertain about how to enter the field. This particular experience highlights how personal projects can lead to professional opportunities, ultimately shaping a fulfilling career in interior design.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. My first born was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3 years old. This changed the course of everything in our lives. The journey of parenting a child with autism can be both challenging and transformative. It often necessitates a significant shift in priorities and lifestyle. For many parents, this means stepping away from personal aspirations, such as a career in interior design, to focus on understanding and supporting their child’s unique needs. This transition can be overwhelming, as it involves navigating a complex landscape of therapies, educational resources, and emotional adjustments. The experience can lead to a profound learning curve, as parents become advocates for their children while also grappling with their own feelings of loss regarding their previous ambitions. Ultimately, this journey can foster resilience and a deeper understanding of both the challenges and joys that come with raising a child with disabilities.
