Inspiring Conversations with Jason Phillips of Toy Barn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Phillips

Hi Jason, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am originally from Dublin, Ohio, which is where I grew up. I went to Kent State University, which is where I received my graduate degree in Economics. After college, I moved back to Columbus in 1999 and began my career in real estate. I first started out in the real estate business working for a residential appraisal shop in my hometown. I then tried residential home sales for a short time, and quickly learned it wasn’t for me, so I jumped over to commercial real estate. I worked for a retail shopping center developer in Ohio and oversaw sales and leasing. In 2003, my dad and I founded the Wesley Development Company. At that time, we focused on land subdivision and entitlement. I moved to Arizona in 2005 and I opened the Scottsdale branch of Wesley Development.

Wesley Development Company LLC., is a family-owned-and-operated real estate development company founded by my dad, Paul Wesley Phillips and myself. Wesley Development Company develops and markets various types of real estate projects in Ohio and Arizona. Our biggest project is the Toy Barn, a luxury garage condominium development with eight locations in Arizona. Unlike traditional self-storage, the Toy Barn is a community of like-minded individuals who prefer to own their space rather than renting or leasing. From collective cars, RV’s, luxury boats, and more, the Toy Barn offers long-term solutions to those in need of a place to store their most precious items. For example, imagine a personal warehouse with a country club like atmosphere.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The first Toy Barn location was opened in the middle of the real estate crash in 2010. That was one of the most difficult experiences I have faced in my career. It took a lot of persistence and tenacity, but my team and I made it through the dark time.

We’ve been impressed with Toy Barn , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Toy Barn is an upscale garage condo facility, an impressive community of premium storage units available for individual ownership, just like a condominium. Private and convenient, the Toy Barn provides the ideal space solution for every performance enthusiasts’ favorite toys, from cars, trucks and motorcycles to boats, jet skis and RVs. Each ‘condo’ is a titled unit and ownership includes access to common areas plus a members-only clubhouse. Owners can build equity in their units and re-sell them the same way people buy and sell condominiums. All units feature a minimum 20-foot ceiling height with a wide range of floorplans. What are your plans for the future?
Toy Barn recently began breaking ground on our eighth Valley location located in Dove Valley. This location is set to open in summer of 2026 and will feature 91 units. We are excited to share that units are already being purchased and there are still several available. Additionally, we have several great opportunities on the horizon that we are looking forward to continued growth over the next few years.
