Hidden Gems: Meet Kristin Horstman of Brighten Your Life Coaching

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Horstman

Hi Kristin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
For the past three years, I’ve been on a mission to help people break free from the exhausting cycle of gray area drinking. As a Certified Gray Area Drinking Master Coach, Health Coach, speaker, blogger, and family support advocate, I’ve dedicated my work to empowering individuals and families to navigate the challenges of alcohol use and anxiety with confidence, clarity, and self-compassion.

I founded Brighten Your Life Coaching because that’s exactly what happens when you step away from alcohol—your whole world gets brighter. The name actually came to me while writing my power statement:

“I work with high-achieving, Type A individuals who have a lot on their plate and rely on alcohol night after night to unwind. The problem? The relentless overwhelm, the anxiety that lingers long after the last drink, and the restless nights that never quite leave you feeling refreshed. If you’re tired of alcohol dimming your light, let’s work together to Brighten Your Life so you can regulate your nervous system, live alcohol-free with ease, and elevate your life instead of escaping it.”

My work in the recovery space is deeply personal because I’ve been there myself. For years, I was that overachiever who drank in the gray area—that in-between space where you’re not hitting rock bottom, but you know alcohol is taking more than it’s giving. I justified my drinking for a long time, moving up and down that spectrum. But between 2017 and 2018, a series of life events pushed me into what I now call the danger zone—where drinking stopped being about fun and became a crutch just to feel normal.

At that point, I wasn’t drinking because I wanted to—I was drinking because my body and brain were screaming for it. The cravings were unbearable, and suffering through them only led to more relapses. I felt stuck, exhausted, and desperate for change.

Then, in early 2020, I started making real progress. I found an incredible therapist, brought home my dream puppy, devoured quit lit, and began stepping away from toxic relationships and situations. For the first time in years, I was stringing together days, weeks, even months of sobriety. But when life threw me curveballs, I still found myself reaching for alcohol. Something was missing.

In 2021, everything changed when I discovered Gray Area Drinking Coaching. Unlike traditional recovery approaches, GAD Coaching uses neuroscience and physiology to rewire the brain and eliminate cravings at the root. And let me tell you—the shift was life-changing. For the first time, I felt true freedom from alcohol. No white-knuckling. No constant inner battle. Just peace.

Without alcohol clouding my mind, stealing my joy, and hijacking my pleasure chemicals, I finally had the space to heal. And in that space, I found the happiest, healthiest, and most fulfilling version of myself. Now, as a coach and educator, I get to help others find that same freedom. Watching my clients step into their power, rediscover their confidence, and truly brighten their lives has been the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done—and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not! The road to where I am today hasn’t always been smooth, but every challenge along the way has shaped me into the person I am now. Like so many others, I had to unlearn old coping mechanisms and build new, healthier ways to navigate life’s ups and downs. But let me tell you—every bit of effort has been worth it.

The past four years have been the happiest of my life, but that doesn’t mean they’ve been free of stress. The difference is, without alcohol in the mix, I handle life’s curveballs with so much more clarity, resilience, and grace. I attract less chaos, but that doesn’t mean challenges don’t show up. That’s just life! The beauty of sobriety is that it gives us the power to respond rather than react. One of my favorite quotes by Viktor Frankl says it perfectly:

“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response.”

Before I ditched alcohol, I was much more reactive—letting emotions dictate my actions without taking a breath to pause. Now, I have that space to recognize what I’m feeling and choose how I want to respond. That shift alone has been life-changing.

When I was launching my coaching business, I was also navigating a personally overwhelming time. Looking back, I am beyond grateful that I had already committed to an alcohol-free life. My nervous system was stronger, and I had built up the self-regulation skills to handle stress in ways that actually supported me. Instead of numbing out, I leaned into my go-to tools—walking, watching the sunset, breathing, cuddling my dog—things that genuinely brought me comfort and peace.

Sobriety doesn’t mean life suddenly becomes easy, but it does mean you show up for yourself in a whole new way. And that is the most empowering feeling in the world.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Brighten Your Life Coaching?

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?

One of my most cherished childhood memories is the day we brought home my beautiful “fur sister,” aka my partner in crime, Sandy.

After my mom and I moved into my grandmother’s house when I was four, I desperately wanted a dog. At first, there was understandable hesitation. A pet meant added expenses and responsibilities for these two incredibly hardworking single mothers. But when I turned five, the stars aligned, and we welcomed a golden retriever puppy into our home!

From the moment Sandy arrived, she filled our house with love, laughter, and light. She was more than just a pet—she was my playmate, my best friend, and my confidante. I could hug her after a bad day, cry on her shoulder when I needed comfort, and share all my troubles with her. Her sweet, loving presence left such a deep mark on me that I knew, someday, I would need another golden retriever in my life.

For years, my husband and I dreamed of getting a dog, but between work and travel, the timing never felt right. Then, at the end of 2019, while I was still struggling with my drinking and mental health, his intuition told him it was time to bring a furry friend into our lives.

When she arrived in January 2020, it was the first time in a long while that I felt true happiness, joy, and hope for the future. Looking back, I know it wasn’t a coincidence that 2020 became a turning point for me.

That year marked a powerful shift in my recovery and my life, and I will forever be grateful for my husband’s bold and beautiful decision to bring a furbaby into our family.
