Today we’d like to introduce you to Shonta’ Eastern.
Hi Shonta’, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Starting a small candle business was a dream I had for years. I loved DIY projects, and candle making was one of those hobbies, and I wanted to turn it into a business. After doing some research and creating a business plan, I launched my small candle business in June 2020 during Covid-19.
At first, it was a slow start. I had to figure out the best way to market my products and reach my target audience. I started by selling my candles at local markets and craft fairs, which helped me gain some exposure and build a customer base.
I also focused on creating a strong online presence through social media and my own website. I posted regularly on Instagram and Facebook, showcasing my products and sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses of my candle-making process. This helped me connect with customers and build a loyal following.
As my business grew, I started to receive more orders and positive feedback from customers. I expanded my product line to include different scents and styles of candles, car fresheners, wax melts, room sprays, and body mists, which helped attract a wider range of customers.
I also focused on building relationships with other small businesses and collaborating on projects and events. This helped me expand my reach and gain more exposure in the community.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running a small candle business definitely had its share of struggles. Some of the main challenges I faced included finding the right suppliers and sourcing high-quality materials, such as wax, wicks, and high-quality essential oils, which was a constant struggle. I had to find reliable suppliers that provided consistent and good-quality products to ensure the candles burned correctly and had a strong fragrance.
As a small business, I had to carefully manage my expenses to stay within budget. This meant finding cost-effective ways to produce my candles without compromising on quality. I had to constantly evaluate my pricing strategy to ensure I was making a profit while remaining competitive in the market.
Handling customer feedback: Dealing with customer complaints or negative feedback was always tough. Whether it was a candle not burning correctly or a customer not liking the scent, I had to address these issues promptly and find solutions to ensure customer satisfaction. It was a learning experience that helped me improve my products and customer service.
Despite these challenges, I persevered and learned valuable lessons along the way. Overcoming these struggles made me a better business owner and helped me grow my candle business into what it is today.
