Today, we’d like to introduce you to Sheila O’Neill.
Hi Sheila, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Ever since I can remember, I have dreamed of working in fashion. Growing up, my cousin and I would spend weekends putting together outfits, taking photos, and creating magazines using Word programs on the computer. We always joke that we were the first fashion influencers!
Currently, I’m working on building an online community where I share fashion, street style, and outfit inspiration. Living in Scottsdale, there are so many amazing locations to shoot in; because Arizona is so beautiful, I’m inspired every day to create content. I’m originally from Canada, so it’s also nice that the weather is always great here, and you can take photos outside all year round.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The greatest obstacles to becoming a fashion content creator are market saturation and being able to access a community that resonates with what I am doing. I always think about the famous line from The Devil Wears Prada: “A million girls would kill for this job.”
Fashion is such a small industry, and so many girls are dying to work as fashion creators, so the competition is steep. Social media has become so saturated that it’s hard to make your mark amongst everyone else, you really have to be creative, and produce something that is unique and sets you apart from what others in a similar niche are doing. It is a lot of hard work, but it’s very rewarding.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I work as a fashion writer and freelance in marketing, but my true passion is content creation in fashion – specifically on Instagram. I have worked hard to build an online community for women who love fashion and who are looking for inspiration. I love putting together outfits for different occasions or characters that I dream up.
Then, scouting locations and writing captions that are thoughtful, engaging, or make people laugh. The entire process is a creative outlet, and I love every aspect, from ideation to engaging with and growing my community.
What matters most to you?
I want my content to be aspirational and inspirational. I think it is important in life to do something that you are good at and something you love and to share that with the world. I have always wanted to create and share that with people.
Growing up, I remember looking up to women with a strong sense of fashion and how those influences helped me build my style. I hope that the content I create can help other women to find their style and to live a life that they find fulfilling and beautiful.
