Rising Stars: Meet Whitney Nicole

Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Nicole.

Hi Whitney, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
All things beauty have always been a passion of mine. Growing up, I would always watch my nana do her makeup and hair. Back then, she wore bright red lipstick and had bright red hair.

I guess you can say she “sparked” my interest. I also grew up with 3 older cousins who would do their makeup and we played dress up. I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup so any opportunity to play with it I took it!

Before I started doing makeup professionally, I would help my friends and family with their makeup. I loved doing it and they pushed me to take my skills to the next level. I was terrified since doing makeup professionally is way different.

But I knew it was something I wanted to do so I dove headfirst into the business and haven’t looked back almost 4 years later.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Since I jumped right into the industry, I had to learn a lot of tricks on my own. The beauty industry is very competitive but there is an opportunity for everyone to be successful.

When I first started in this industry, I knew no one. Over the years, I have met some great artists and made great friendships. One of my struggles was not comparing myself to all the amazing talent here in AZ.

I always tell new and upcoming artists that you are unique and it takes practice to master your skill. Don’t compare yourself to others because that could be your downfall. I learned that very quickly.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a hair and makeup artist.

I specialize in bridal makeup and hair but I love getting creative with color and complex looks. I first started doing makeup professionally almost 4 years ago. My hairstyling journey is still new and I’m learning every day. I’m going to thank my boss/friend Ashley Grant for pushing me to do hair and for all her time in training.

My very first client was a bride and from this day, I am so proud that I pushed myself to start this business. I love enhancing the natural beauty of my clients and helping them feel beautiful in their skin. I have met amazing people along the way and I really owe it to getting out of my comfort zone and just following my passion.

I believe what sets me apart is my ability to do a wide array of looks. I can do the most natural of looks to super dramatic. I love color and embracing creativity. I believe finding what you’re good at in this industry is important but I also think catering to many different looks will go a long way.

What matters most to you?
There are many things that matter to me but the number one thing that keeps me going is my family/friends. I have been extremely blessed with such an amazing support system and they keep me going when I want to give up. I work full time, I go to school full time and my beauty business I do on the side.

It can be very busy sometimes but their support means everything to me. I want to personally thank my cousins Destiney and Britney for supporting me since day one. My mentor/friend Ashley for teaching me even when I doubt myself. My beautiful friend Michelle for taking the time to always check on me to make sure I’m taking care of myself.

My partner Greg for keeping me in check and giving me the motivation to keep going when it gets hard. And lastly to my clients who I consider my friends.

Thank you for trusting me and allowing me to be part of your life for an hour or two. For the few hours you are in my chair, I want you to know you made a difference in my life and I truly appreciate your support with my small business.
