Rising Stars: Meet Noor Turk of Fashion Design Institute

Today we’d like to introduce you to Noor Turk.

Hi Noor, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Noor Turk, and I will be the fashion designer for all your favorite celebrities. I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, but I am originally Palestinian from a city called Khalil. I lived in Phoenix until the age of nine, when my dad found a new and improved job in Dubai, so we flew overseas and lived there for the next nine years. At age eighteen, I graduated from high school and got accepted into a hand full of fashion schools; FIT (fashion institute of technology), Polimoda, ESMOD, FDI (fashion design institute), and many more in the UK too. My final choice was to study in Germany because of my love for European culture and aesthetics, but also, from an educational point of view, it was the most logical choice. Why fashion? Well, fashion has been my greatest passion ever since I could speak. I used to draw mermaids and fairies dressed up in super colorful Avantgarde pieces. I also would sew outfits for my Barbies out of any material I could use, whether it was tissues, paper, or fabrics. I would always find a way to create something new. Now I live in Düsseldorf, Germany, and I am slowly discovering my fashion direction as in the type of clothing aesthetics I would like to create for my future career. So far, I’ve created two mini collections for a university composed of two different aesthetics, and I’ve created them with different techniques. The next step in my career is to create another collection and submit my previous collections to magazines. They have a couple of months off from university to do an internship somewhere in the world with a designer or clothing company that can help me expand my creative direction and help me discover my true fashion calling.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Though out my life, I have not had career challenges so far. Thanks to my understanding and supportive parents and the fact that I’ve just turned 20, I think I will soon face many challenges. First, the fashion industry is very competitive. Second, you must work hard to get the recognition you need to make a name for yourself. Third, dedicate your time and energy to your designs, and lastly, you need to achieve success, which doesn’t happen overnight. Also, I may receive backlash from my Muslim community for my designs as my garments are on the more risqué and skin-baring side, which is very opposite to what religion stands for.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a student at university studying to become a Fashion Designer. I’ve created ten garments as part of my school assignments. Firstly, I was assigned to create a garment out of recyclables, so I created a garment out of burned plastic goody bags that I melted using lighters. Then glued and designed it using Epoxy Resin mixed with colored powders to bring life to the garment. Afterward, I created my first small collection consisting of three garments. At the time of this assignment, I was very emotionally invested in the idea of love and how it affects you emotionally and physically. I did some research to see if there were different types of love and found in Greek culture that there are eight different types. I chose the three most appealing/meaningful types of love: Eros (romantic love): personal infatuation, and physical pleasure. Ludus (playful love): flirting and beginning stages of intimate love. Agape (selfless love): an empathetic attitude of love for everyone and anyone. Now, I am working on another mini collection inspired by shows I’ve grown up with that have helped inspire me to become a future Fashion Designer.

What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Hopefully over the next couple years, I would have already graduated university and be apart of my universities graduation fashion show in Paris. Then have my internship abroad, and I would also have finished my masters in maybe fashion business and then started working for a designer, or try to open my own company. Finally, I hope to see myself grow as a fashion designer and to grow my connections in the fashion industry too.
