Rising Stars: Meet Jasmine Gayongala of Litchfield Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Gayongala.

Hi Jasmine, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a registered nurse by career. I started as a labor and delivery nurse, providing moms and babies care. Working in a hospital, I did long shifts but fewer days a week. This allowed me to have multiple days off to pursue my other passion: baking. Being a Filipino- American, I constantly crave Filipino flavors but wanted to create something that not just Filipinos would love. So during my days off, I would experiment and create recipes that anyone could enjoy. These desserts would bridge the gap between classic Filipino recipes and American desserts; I would start bringing these desserts to my family, friends, and a few coworkers. Everyone was excited to try something new. This was when I began Desserts RN. I wanted to create an avenue on Instagram to post my content and possibly get some orders. However, being a full-time nurse got in the way. I focused more on my career than my passion, which is what a normal person would do. In March 2020, I started a new career path as a Nurse Educator at a university. When everyone started working from home, I did too. This gave me the chance to start up my passion again. Everyone on Instagram started selling things from home, so I decided I should. Ever since then, my business has slowly been growing. Being back at work full-time, I am trying to do my best to balance my career and my business. However, I am proud of my work and the people I have met through this journey.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
This has been such a journey! I put a lot into my career and am trying to find the balance between my passion and career. Both are great and have lots of challenges. Working full-time and having this business is not easy! Sometimes I work a 12-hour shift and then bake until the early morning! Although it can be a big struggle, I love seeing how people react to my desserts. Being a part of the big and little moments in someone’s life is such a special moment, which makes it worth it.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create custom cakes and desserts for all types of events. I do create classic flavors that we have here in the US. However, I am unique in creating Filipino-inspired flavors, such as ube, pandan, flan, and many others. I wanted to bridge the gap between Filipino desserts and other pastries. I wanted to introduce flavors from the Philippines and show the world what unique food the Philippines has. I love my culture and want to share it with others.

What makes you happy?
I am so blessed by God and the people he has brought to my life. I would not have anything today without my relationship with Christ. My husband, family, and friends give me happiness and fulfillment. They are my biggest supporters, challenge me, but are my great blessing.
