Rising Stars: Meet Janessa Schuelke of Peoria

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janessa Schuelke.

Hi Janessa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I previously worked in HR for most of my career. I began in aesthetics as a hobby and searching for a solution to some skin issues I was having. I loved learning about skin conditions, the histology, how ingredients affected it, etc. I spent my free time soaking up as much education as possible about skin. It was then I had a bit of an epiphany. Was my love of skincare a hobby or something more? I wasn’t super excited about returning to school, but I knew I was being pulled towards aesthetics, so I started digging into the idea and how it could work. After much prayer and encouragement from my sweet husband and family/friends, I started researching and touring aesthetic schools. It wasn’t long before I fell in love with the Southwest Institute of Natural Aesthetics (SWINA), as they matched my views of a more holistic, whole-body approach to aesthetics. I could obtain a part-time position with the company I worked for at the time, which allowed me to do aesthetics school at night. It was a sacrifice to make that schedule work (very long days & short nights!), but when there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, it makes it a little easier to persevere and finish the race! It was all worth it because I am now living my dream!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Mostly, I have been blessed with a smooth road. When it comes to being a small business owner, there will always be some bumps in the road, though, and that can be a good thing. I’ve tried very hard to be logical, economical, and considerate of both short and long-term impacts in every decision I make for the business. I also consider if the decision is good for my clients and me. But even if you think you are doing the best thing, it doesn’t go as planned; sometimes, that is due to a lack of experience or elements that are out of your control. Either way, I always try to take it as a learning experience and keep it in my toolbox for how I approach and consider future business decisions. I think it’s important to think every decision through and do the best with what you know. I also very much believe in obtaining wise counsel! I feel prayer, other mature business owners, aestheticians, family, and friends that you implicitly trust their opinions and views often bring great perspective. That can greatly help when you need insight!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Minted Skin Care is a natural and holistic aesthetics treatment studio specializing in preventative care, corrective treatments, and graceful aging. I am so blessed to have my business inside Healing of the Body and Mind, a holistic spa where amazing massage and colon hydrotherapy treatments are offered. We are very like-minded in our approach to whole body health, so we make a perfect pair!

Skin health and education have always been my priority with every client. We must start with skin health first, starting with SPF, professional home care, and monthly foundation-building treatments. Once we have that established, the sky is the limit! We can move towards more advanced treatments and homecare which is always very exciting because that’s when we start to make the extreme correction.

I love to spend as much time as possible with my clients so that we can set expectations and goals for their skin. I always tell my clients that skincare is a journey; it’s a marathon, not a race. Making change takes time and commitment, and that’s why it takes teamwork. When we are both doing our part, the skin will flourish. My goal is to make skin the healthiest it can be while creating real, tangible change! I think those are the things that set me apart as both an aesthetician and a business. I genuinely care about your skin and am committed to the journey!

I offer an array of treatments for all skin care needs, but I’m proud of my preventative care education and treatment plans and graceful aging treatment plans! We need to age, BUT we can do it gracefully by supporting our skin and treatments that stimulate fibroblasts and the production of collagen and elastin.

I pride myself on honesty, ethics, Christian morals, and integrity; I strive to operate personally and professionally to the highest degree in all of these areas.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck! I have had many blessings in my life and business, including being prayerful and mindful of my decisions and actions. That’s not to say that I haven’t had many hard seasons or challenges in my life and business, as we all have, but those things have been used to shape me and mold me into who I am. Sometimes we must go through certain things to become a better, wiser, and more refined person on the other side. While I think we can all agree it’s not fun to be in the midst of the storm, we are not alone as we go through it, which brings me comfort.
