Rising Stars: Meet Hillary Kindler of Phoenix + Omaha + Traveling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hillary Kindler.

Hi Hillary, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I’ve been a storyteller in many forms all my life. As a child, I took over my parent’s old 90s camcorder and created music videos in their backyard. I also remember being completely attached to a cheap digital camera. I would make slideshows to music. For me, it was always about how the music helped tell the story of the images. So music is a big part of my videos in that I seek to find the perfect song that captures a couple’s energy. Years later, after years in retail without a clue of what to do with my life, I had to remember what lit me up. My cousin’s wedding announcement gave me the green light to shoot his wedding, free of charge, to prove to others and myself that I could do it. I edited it on iMovie, of all things, somehow still doing a pretty decent job with no formal camera or editing training. Now 7 years later, I’m entirely self-taught. Editing comes like second nature to me. I almost feel like the masterpiece already exists. I just revealed it. It truly feels like that when the storyline clicks. I am based in both Omaha and Phoenix and offer the option of travel in any package.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, working for yourself is always inconsistent. I had to get over a hump of needing work and lacking confidence initially. Covid also threw my workload off but realigned me with a work/play balance that better suits me. I wouldn’t trade working out of desperation because creating my schedule offers me freedom, even though it may sometimes be inconsistent. I’m pretty lax about it. I know my work speaks for itself, and word has spread by word of mouth. I attract clients who see my work’s value, beauty & uniqueness.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve touched on this already, but I’m a natural at creating dreamy wedding videos that stand out, especially to those who speak my language. I like to say I create ethereal wedding videos. I never look at what anyone else is doing or jump on any editing trends. I edit how I edit. Of course, I was born with an artistic visual eye, but my passion has always been mostly in post-production – its storytelling. I am very good at capturing a mood that way. No generic editing here. My goal is to set the mood through the music and showcase the unique, candid moments of the day. My work isn’t complete if the audience isn’t crying or blissfully lost in the story. I reflect on movie scenes that influenced me as a kid, and they were always the musical scenes with evocative, fantasy-like moments of love and play. That’s what I capture and what I create.

We love surprises, fun facts, and incredible stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Ha! My first reaction is that I still don’t know what I am doing. There are well-trained photographers & videographers out there who understand fully how a camera works, and honestly, I won’t ever fully comprehend. I’m an artist. My brain works how it works. I’ve worked alongside people with all the gadgets, gizmos, training, and knowledge of photography, yet what do they lack? The spark, the flare, the eye. The storytelling aspect makes me stand out. I don’t care to be able to speak the language of the camera.
