Rising Stars: Meet Christi Schuman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christi Schuman .

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always loved taking photos and couldn’t wait to get a camera when I was little and now I get to take photos of families, weddings, headshots, lifestyle and so much more!

Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. I remember when I got my first camera and it had a setting called ‘macro’, I would go around the house I grew up in and take close-up pictures of everything. A few years passed and I was a second shooter for my cousin for a few weddings, which turned into a few weddings I did on my own. I just fell in love with capturing memories for others on their special day.

In 2019, I went full time into photography. I was hooked with taking photos of everything, starting off with taking photographs of families with their little ones. Later, I got the opportunity to be the photographer for engagement photos, more weddings, newborns, as well as headshots for professionals – all of which have only enhanced my love for all things photography.

Each of the special memories that I have had a front-row seat to has been such a great experience and I look forward to all the future has to offer.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, anything that you have a passion for and really believe in always has ebbs and flows in it. With being a photographer, there are times when your schedule can’t meet with a client when they are available, so of course, they find someone who can.

Then you have ‘slow season’ which can vary wherever you live. Of course, being a creative person, you can doubt yourself if a shoot didn’t go the way you hoped it would, but you have to be willing to learn that there are going to be challenges along the way. Otherwise, how do you grow?

Since starting full-time with photography in 2019, I have gone through some major changes in my personal life which lead to having to get a full-time job and not being very open to my clients, but the journey has been wonderful to grow with. I’m always learning new things!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Well, I am a photographer in Phoenix, Arizona. I mostly take photos of weddings, families, engagements, and headshots. I love working with natural light and making sure the client feels their best self came out in the photos!

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes, of course as the world knows, weddings were put off since crowds of people weren’t suggested and I think everyone was just scared to be around anyone so that led to fewer clients wanting photos.

I did however set up a Christmas scene in my garage and offer friends, family, and my neighbors to come to get 15 minute Christmas photos as a way to get out and still respect the distance.

They turned out great and everyone had a great time!
