Meet Zaaron Williams of AZ Chimney Cakes in North Phoenix (Paradise Valley Mall)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zaaron Williams.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Zaaron. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
AZ Chimney Cakes started after a trip to Prague, CZ. Chimney cakes were available almost anywhere in the old town and new town Prague where they were cooked on spits over open fires on the street or in rotisserie ovens in quaint cafes. Shortly after arriving back home, I could not get the sweet dessert out of my mind and began researching what they were and where the closest store that had them was. There were no stores in Arizona so the journey began. My mother and I started heavily researching how they were made and recipes to make them. It took months after receiving the equipment from Europe to finally get the techniques down. Each weekend we spent making small batches and sharing them with neighbors, friends, family, and co-workers. Seeing the joy and happiness of people eating an item you baked as a labor of love helped spark an idea of bringing Chimneys to the masses in Arizona. Shortly after, we started AZ Chimney Cakes in a food trailer. We started going to events in the east valley where food trucks/trailers serve up favorites to all those hungry for something new to eat. Our first event was on March 29th and we opened the AZ Chimney Cakes cafe in November 2018 at Paradise Valley Mall.

Has it been a smooth road?
The journey was anything but smooth. Food truck is some of the hardest work you can imagine. Being in Arizona as it heats up baking Chimney Cakes in a 700-degree oven is not easy in the summer months. We have had our fair share of setbacks from generators going down to more recently being, another food truck running into our trailer at an event. The biggest challenge is educating people, so many people will not try something they have never heard of or tasted. Some will not even try a sample. The challenge of sharing the goodness and spreading the word of “What is a Chimney Cake?” prevails daily on Cactus Road in Paradise Valley Mall.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with AZ Chimney Cakes – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We are best known for our one and the only, unique desserts available in Arizona. All of our chimney cakes are hand rolled, using fresh daily-prepared dough with a traditional Hungarian recipe. The toppings/fillings in the cakes are made from the best quality ingredients and help appeal to different populations. The best selling and crowd favorites include Bavarian cream (The Munich), strawberries and whipped cream (The Barcelona) and the Sonora (Savory with Jalapenos and Havarti cheese baked in the dough). I am most proud of the quality of the products we serve. The cafe has Italian coffee as well as a home-based recipe for the soft serve we fill chimney cones with. The uniqueness and quality of products sold are what help set us apart from traditional dessert shops and cafes. We should hail the motto “Get a customer, keep a customer for life” because once a person tries a Chimney, they are hooked craving the crunch combined with soft inside is unforgettable.

How would you describe the type of kid you were growing up?
I grew up in a military family in which we moved every couple of years. I lived all around the US and Korea as a child and was a happy extroverted introvert (shy and quiet at first and quite outgoing after I warmed up to you). I was extremely creative and always looking for things/processes to improve.
