Meet Yvonne Mugure

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvonne Mugure.

Hi Yvonne, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m originally from Kenya, Africa but I grew up mostly in Massachusetts and all over the east coast. I majored in Digital Communication and have always been interested in meeting and sharing stories through social media. Naturally, due to my background when I got covid-19 one of the first things I did was share my story on my social platforms. This was at the very beginning before people knew much about it so there were some misconceptions I wanted to correct. At the time, there were speculations that only people over 40+ years and non-black were getting Covid. Seeing how I was neither of those and had Covid, I felt a need to inform others and warn them to be careful. I wasn’t expecting my story to travel all over the world but I’m happy so many people found the things I shared helpful.

The response to my story inspired me to pursue social media full-time. Now, I’m a TikToker (Yvonne.Mugure) and A TikTok Account Manager for an Ad Agency. So everyday, I get to see stories from people all over the world and continue to share mine as well!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t at all been a smooth road. I would say 2 of my toughest moments were when I was hit by a driver who was high on cocaine and drunk when I was walking. The other when I got Covid.

When I was hit by the driver, I had to get a metal jaw and replace my left hip. It took about a year of recovery and left a lot of scars physically and mentally.

Getting covid was tough physically but mentally as well because I was isolated from everyone for three weeks. This was before the pandemic so I hadn’t fully been accustomed to staying indoors 24/7.

Both moments have been my most defined and character-building ones though and I don’t at all regret them.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a professional TikToker, TikTok Account Manager for an Ad Agency, I sell courses and also do brand deals as well as affiliate marketing for small and large companies all over the US.

I’m most proud of how I was able to turn a negative thing like Covid and allow the experience to teach me. I’ve since been able to create a career I truly love!

I’ve also appeared on Fox and CW talking about TikTok which makes me so happy!

I would say first my hair is pink now so that’s a little strange to people. Then I believe I have an inviting smile and personality. I’m also willing to share things online others find uncomfortable. In my darkest times, I found complete strangers online who were going through a similar struggle which made me feel less alone. I want to make others feel like they have a cheerleader right there with them as well.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
For anyone who has Covid, I know it can get tough and you can feel so isolated but join FB groups or research stories on IG or TikTok. You are not alone in your symptoms and struggles. There are so many people out there willing to help, connect with them.

Anyone who wants to pursue a career in social media, it’s 100% possible. You don’t have to like being in front of a camera. There are so many opportunities in tech that are hiring professionals in specific social platforms. Learn about IG, TikTok, FB and whichever platform that interests you and monetize it.
